How much is too much? I have a 36x18x21 tank and was debating adding a MH system. So how much is two much....1 250w, 2 250w? Tank will be SPS/LPS only.

You could light that tank with 2 150w MHs and grow just about anything

1 mh covers just about 2 sq ft.

If you want the 250watters Id go with one in the center and use 2 T5s or VHO for actinic supplement.

That would help cover the area that is not directly lit by the MH. Or you could just run two MH although I dont think youd have any problems running just the 1 MH.

I would get a newer reflector like the lumenbrite, Lumenmax or lumenarc and run one 250w. I was just reading last night one of sanjays articles on the newer generation of reflectors and how well they spread out light so much better. He only runs 3 250w on his 500 gallon and I am planning something similar but may supplement it with vhos.

I have always liked the ice cap reef illumination fixtures, but I think the 3' w/2 250w maybe too much....I could alway go for the 2' fixture that has one 250w.

A general rule of thumb for Mh is 24" x 24" of coverage. Since your tank is 24" tall 175/150w may not be enough. I think 1 - 250w in the middle and multiple T5HO to cover the edges. Keep your SPS in the middle and lay your LPS around the sides? Kind of like a bouquet of roses surrounded by babies breath to accent it. ( I did not just post that, did I? It has been a long week. I need a beer)

Steven,
I have 2- 250w 12k in Lumenbrites with 4-36" T5s and it's not too much. Come by and take a look. One 250w was just not enough...

I thought the 36 inch icecap was just one 250, I saving up to get in from gabe. cedrod has the 48inch one and it's a sleek looking fixture.
