Is 'inline' the same as 'external' when it comes to pumps?
What does inline mean?
Could I use a pump like this outside of my sump (external) to return water to my tank?:

Whew - I was afraid I was asking another stupid question so I am kind of relieved you're not sure either! lol

Inline would be external. Inline as in inline on the plumbing. It would be nice if everyone called them the same thing to make life easy on people.

nice that gives me options. ;)
I am thinking of getting that Sicce Syncra 5.0 as my return pump for the big tank. With all of Pings talk about cryptic fuge etc. I could use the return pump compartment in my sump as a cryptic fuge and just have the pump outside ;)

Not bad for only using 105w, but i hope it does not have a restarting issue like the Sicce PSK 2500 .

Yea, I've been looking at sicce...they are great on wattage. I could drop like 35w over my mag pump.

I read on the Sicce PSK 2500 the problem with restart was due to pinwheel impeller.
Do the return pumps (Syncra) have pinwheel impellers too or jsut the ones made for skimmers (PSK)?

It alot easier to get parts for Mag, i don't know if they do carry parts for Sicce yet.

The pinwheel would touch the housing cover to caused it hard to restart. I would think it uses pinwheel impeller since that is a very popular design for pumps now day.

video of pump being taken apart:

Doesn't look like a pinwheel impeller on the Sicces.
I think I'll try one. Gabe's getting them in at a good price...

I know pinwheel or needle wheel are popular for skimmer applications because they do such a good job at chopping up the bubbles into tiny bubbles.
I would assume a pump that is designed to just bring water from one are to another wouldn't necessarily need or have a pinwheel impeller though since without the air input there really wouldn't be any need to chop up bubbles. No?

From Sicce USA:

Yes, the pumps can be used submersible and also inline external. They come with barbed fittings and they also have female US threaded inlet and outlets. If you use US barbed fittings like all applications you will need teflon tape.

Here is an attachment and information from our US literature that may also help you. If you have any other questions you can direct them to me and I will help in any way I can.

Karin have you looked into a Pan World 50PXX? 90 watts versus your 105w and pretty much all you hear is the cooling fan on the back? I was trying to post the flow chart but it is off line for the PW 50PXX. I saw on yours the pump you want will drop down from 1300 to 925GPH at 5'.

I noticed in the video that the mag pump was placed on the bottom of the tank, with nothing under it. The Sicce has rubber suction cups (which will harden in about a year). That's not really a fair comparison...

I had a panworld (it was the 100 though) and found it kind of noisy. Plus I may still use it submerged so I kind of like the versatility
90w is nice though!

Karin, just remember that when you submerge a pump, it will add significantly to the heat in your tank. Of course, I still have a steal of a chiller for sale...

I have had a 100PXX and there is a big difference in noise levels. You are more than welcome to come by and listen to mine to hear the noise level. I have a tile floor so no carpet to silence it.
