View Full Version : Glueing rock together with what?

I want to glue my base rock and dead coral pieces into an arrangement before adding to my tank. They are completely dry. I have not had much luck with superglue. I was thinking of using "great stuff", but I am afraid it will dry too fast/expand too much, etc. What do you suggest and where do I get it?

Zip ties, acrlyic rods, and underwater epoxy. And maybe a little sweat n blood :D

I found this link really inspiring:

I bought some of the nylon thread rods, nuts and washers but I am also considering doing some components glued.
Bob Fenner writes that something called PLumber's Buddy is reef safe and to watch out for some under water epoxy that contain metal.

Where are you getting underwater epoxy and acrylic rods? Home Depot? I've got zip ties--they are the new bailing wire/duct tape! :)

I ordered teh nylon rods online because I couldn't find them locally.
The epoxy should be at home depot.
also consider the acryl and stuff they had in the link.

That is really cool. I love the background piece on eggcrate. How does one get that to stay on the back of the tank?

It is very cool isn't it?
I was thinking about doing that but firewater's experience with the trapped nutrients in the background (he used foam) kind of scared me. I do think he is now planning to do something similar to this. Maybe PM him about his plans?

My guess would be silicone. Anyone check with regal plastics to see if they have nylon/plastic all thread? I used zipties and epoxy. I used LPS stuff and some aquamend from home depot.

I believe firewater is still going to do a background, just no foam. Plan might change though

I thought this one was pretty interesting if your tank is a little taller. I like how he put holes in the pvc also to create some more tunnels.

Do you have to wait for the underwater epoxy, grout, "plumbers buddy" and the like to cure before adding live stuff, or is it already reef safe? My tank is 32" tall, so the pvc stand is pretty interesting to me.

I put my rocks together in my nano with Gorilla Glue. It expands, runs, takes about an hour to cure and doesn't look pretty at first. But in no time it changed colors and blended in perfectly. It's pretty permanent though.

... with Gorilla Glue...

Really? I had thought about using that, but wasn't sure if I would trust it in the tank. No adverse effects? How long has it been running with the Gorilla Glue? I love that stuff for my wood projects.

About 6 months ago. If I remember right, it's a cyanoacrylate. A form of super glue.

Ive been building rock structures for my 180g using old plastic hangers cut into peices for rods and silicone. Same silcone we use to seal our tanks. they are coming out to be pretty good so far. The silicone dries and swells holding everything together plus I drill a hole just big enough for the rod.

I will try and get a pic.

I didn't think of using the silicone, but I purchased acrylic rods from Regal Plastics, they come in 6 foot pieces.

I went glue less as well with the threaded nylon rods and nuts
(pic in post #15 of this thread: http://www.maast.org/showthread.php?59626-Rocks-Rods-and-Nuts-finished-pic-p.-2/page2&highlight=rods)

You can pick the whole thing up in one piece without worrying about stuff slipping. I've attached some new pieces to the side that wouldn't have held without glue or nuts.

Heres what i made using old Plastic hangers and silicone. Most of these have a tower look, but there are going to be placed in the tank to give it a more natural reef like look with the various cave here in there. Have to make sure my moray eel is going to be happy! also plan on making a arch.
