The recycling of my old rock is going better than expected and I may have purchased a little too much of my new dry rock.
Dry rock is an economical alternative to starting with all liverock.
This dry rock is not harvested from a living reef. It's from an ancient reef inland so it hasn't had any organic matter on it in a million years (quick cycling).
Here's some info on this type of rock:
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/eco-rox-fiji-dry-rock/brs-dry-rock/brs-reef-saver-dry-aquarium-eco-rock.html

I worked with some of the rocks last night and they are also easy to shape (hammer and chisel) into something more interesting or drill for locking different rocks together. The rocks are pretty big but can be split into halves with not much breakage/rubble due to the structure (holes, etc.)

Asking $1.75 per pound and I can bring them into town (San Antonio) with me.
Most of the pieces are 'large rock' shaped and weigh 5 to 8 pounds a piece.

Apparently the BRS Reef Saver rock is the same as MarcosRock Key Largo or Reefcleaners Ancient Reef Rock according to RC:

I am interested Karin. How many pounds do you have?

Europhyllia
Wed, 28th Apr 2010, 09:24 AM
I have lots. I would guess I have about 70 pounds more than I really need now that I found a way to safely reuse my old.

ill take about 20-25lbs, also your mailbox is full lol

Europhyllia
Wed, 28th Apr 2010, 09:33 AM
also your mailbox is full lol
I hate having to constantly prune my messages! I still think larger mailbox volume for charter members would be a really nice perk.
Got you down for 20-25 pounds (any size requests)?

im trying to make a vertical stack so i can have some swiming space for my fishies, and more places to mount my stix, so what ever you think

Do you have any w/ a nice arch shape?

Europhyllia
Wed, 28th Apr 2010, 09:48 AM
No. It's all DIY. ;) Shapes are mostly 'large boulders'.
They really crack apart nicely though (as in break in half rather than shatter into lots of pieces). I made an arch last night (for myself) and it was pretty easy to do.

I've posted this before but here are some ideas on how to put rock together:
http://www.marcorocks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=49

I think a small arch for you smaller tank could be easily accomplished with the mortar method. :)

Sounds good.
It would be great if I could bring all of this into town at the same time so if you guys don't mind I'll wait till the weekend and see if we can arrange a meetup in a central location where I can meet several people at once. Is that okay?

Those of you who have never bought or owned the dry rock, whether it be this BRS or from Marcorocks. This is a great deal. As we have all read, PATIENCE is essential in this hobby. So all you have to do is just wait it out and all this rock will become live and covered in coraline algae (and if you seed it with a small piece of live rock, it will go even quicker). I'd probably say 90% of the rocks in my current tank is from Marcorocks and it has nothing but purple and green all over it.

The great thing about this type of rock is that it comes dry, so the weight you are buying is deceiving (especially as this type of rock is typically really porous). When you buy LR from other members and LFS, it is typically bogged down with water weight. You are definitely getting more rock for the money buying it dry, so this 10 - 15 lbs you are getting from Karin is more comparable to 20 - 30 lbs of the live rock you get from others.

If I were on my next project, i'd have scooped this up in a hurry.

Happy reefing and way to pass on the savings Karin ;)

Thanks Ismael. As usual I overdid it and my impatience is your gain! lol
I actually paid $2.10 per pound plus about $65 in shipping so I do think $1.75 delivered to SA is a pretty good deal.
I already weighed the chunks for Mike and Chris and took pictures of it so you guys can see what you will get. :)

Pictures of the lots are added to the first post.

Europhyllia

That last one is big Chris. It would take up quite a bit of space (unless you divide it up for a pillar stack)

Thanks for meeting my wife, I got her to swing by Gabe's to pick up a couple pieces he had remaining so I can put them all in the 55gal that I'm setting up as a possible quarentine tank so maybe the new established stuff will help the set from you get going. I have a feeling that the 55 will turn up being another full salty though, lol....Gabe, I need more equipment! lol
