What does everyone use for refugium lighting? It seems like most of the fixtures sold use pc bulbs, what about the old school dome fixtures w/ some kind of fluorescent bulb?

I consider Ping a fuge expert here on MAAST. Look at post #6 on this thread:

We are currently using a T5 light fixture only because we are making it a fuge/frag tank all in one. We used the light Ping recommended on our fuge the past couple of years.

Thanks for the link...I went and got one from lowe's. Looks like it will work perfect, and I love the price.

JT, I wonder if that was because of a sudden change in the lighting regiment.
I use the HD lamp in my fuge with two 36" T5s for frags (not much of a collection but until I get a separate tank set up for the stuff I don't want in my display tank...). I've got crazy growth, in fact I've got to trim my chaeto back by a couple of pounds... any vegans out there? :D

Im using a cheap dome clamp light from home depot and a "grow bulb" CF from there. I want to step up but not sure for price - do old regular incandescent work just fine?
I'm tempted to setup some ancient CF bulbs that would grow algae better.. since it will need a different spectrum than corals.

I'll check out and buy one of these.. maast rules. I've been wanting to run 2 bulbs now this one just doesn't seem bright enough.

Currently i am doing 24x7 on there just to bloom the algae real quick. I'll probably swing it here soon.

I have mangroves, cheato and mystery weed in my fuge and all I use is two Lowe's clamp lights with energy saver daylight bulbs.
Everything is growing well. :)

Ooh, Alienpirate said something that kicked my gray matter up a notch. I know some of you guys use the CFC bulbs from HD... I'm guessing that's a fancy city way of saying regular bulbs with a flourecent curly tube mashed up inside...
Well, I went from a 90 watt incandecent bulb to a 120 watt cfc bulb and had very poor results. I've since turned back to the incandescent bulb and the green stuff is just reaching where it can, phenonomal growth.
Don't want to hijack the post or go off topic... anyone know how much algae is too much? I tend to not want to get rid of it unless someone is in need and as a result I've got quite a bit.

when you say incandescent bulb do you mean a regular house bulb? i dont think i have ever seen a 90 watter. I am using a hd compact flourescent stuffed inside a regular bulb and my chaeto just kinda sits there.
