Alright Ladies and Gents. I am getting in my new 100G tank next week and I have been pondering wether to go DSB or BB on this tank. I havent really seen any decent pictures of a bare bottom tank and I was wondering if everyone could post pictures of their bare bottom tank.
I have weighed the pros and cons and im about 75% sure im going to go BB with a DSB in my fuge but I want to see what it would look like.
So come BB tank people! Post your pictures!
Also I added a poll to see what % likes and dislikes this configuration.
Thanks!

You know I would have liked to put neutral and likes.... I don't harbor a single dislike for the bb, but I don't think I'd ever go that route although I do enjoy seeing them. I don't like DSB in the DT either.

Thanks! I might take you up on that some time. Its going to be mixed. I think im going to try and get the bottom covered in different color zoas but there will be ALOT of SPS im sure.

I am all for topless. I think it looks much better than with those heavy canopies on top. But bare bottom...that's not my thing unless it's a well aged bare bottom with stuff pretty much grown over it all the way. Like chalice or acans or something. A brand new bare bottom just looks too bare for my taste. And I am too much into the instant gratification thing to attempt waiting for well aged and overgrown.

It took my tank 3 months to cover with coraline .With topless, you will reduce alot of heat and better gas exchange, but watch out for jumpers. R.I.P my picasso:mad:......I have the cover now :)(thanks Karin).

WOW Giau that is a nice tank! I like the look you have. I noticed you dont have the starboard other than no fear from falling rock is there another reason you did not use it?

Thanks, i figured i did not need it since am only using single stack rocks. Plus i did not want stuffs to get caught under there and become a nitrate trap.Even though i was going use sealant to cover the gap. Richard(Reefcube )has starboard and it looks real nice too.

I went BB on my BC14. It originally had sand, but between the diatoms it was spurring and the sugar fine sand storms I pulled it out within week #2. I probably would have stuck w/ it if it wasn't for the sand storms. Stacking rocks is a PITA (no starboard) but otherwise I like it. Very hassle free and will never become a nutrient sink hole.
I like to look underneath the sand bed in my 58g for sand critters. I've noticed overtime that the bottom is getting dirtier and dirtier. So I am leaning towards sugar fine w/ a coarse top layer on the next tank. Good luck w/ whatever you decide.
Sorry, no pics

How often do you BB guys siphon the detritus in your aquariums? Or do you use 100 micron filter socks? Also curious on the long term health of the aquarium (3 + years)?
Years ago I had a BB reef, it was beautiful at first, but after a couple years it became a detritus trap. I found it be a real challenge to keep up with, and the systems health began to deteriorate. I would like to try it again, so what are the secrets to long term success with these systems?

My tank only running for 3 months, but i blow detritus to one corner and siphon it out during water change. I also use an Eheim Sludge Remover (a must have tool) to spot vaccum at anytime or during water change. Will add filter sock soon to help out.

I think the problem is that you have to secure the LR....who has time for that
Letting zoas or green carpet cover the bottom... doesnt that cause the water to slow down and trap debris, thus defeating the purpose of bb?

I sure wish someone would post some barebottom pictures lol. I posted in the photography forum but there are no photographs. If anyone needs me to I can come over and photograph their tank. Free of charge:) I do take donations though :D
