View Full Version : Going to buy a tang...

yes, that's right. I give up. I am buying a tang.
It's got to be Zebrasoma for the kind of algae I want it to eat.
I saw Reefs2U had a Scopas on their list so I am going to drive up there at noon to see if it's still there.
Polly's had a sailfin - might be another option if the Scopas is sold.
I am leaning towards Scopas because Teeb's Stumpy Scopas seemed pretty relaxed and I read they were less aggressive than yellow tangs.
So you all wish me luck
- in finding a Scopas
- in it being really hungry
- and too busy to scare my clownfish
- or at least really slow so I can catch it easily and rehome it

The one at Polly's has been sold.
Do tangs have a reputation of being that aggressive? Everyone stays out of the way of my sailfin, but I thought it was because he's a big lumbering galumph always trying to be in in everyone's business.

I think it varies so much fish to fish. My Kole was the least aggressive fish in my tank.

Well my Sailfin will even each cheto :) lol she is such a pig, on the down side she beats up my spawning maroon clown that is a good 2 inches longer than her and bullies everyone else in the tank up. I had to move her to a 28 gal biocube till I can figure out what to do. She is about 3 in long and 3/4 of an inch wide lol.

I am not sure that LFS want my caulerpa in their tank. Plus the fish might not feel like eating right away don't you think?

It's got to be zebrasoma. Scopas would really be my favorite choice followed by sailfin and yellow. My son likes powder blue but lets not get carried away! lol
the caulerpa I have is nummularia. Who's Jason?

Sailfin tangs will get really big. I like the yellow tang, or purple tang.
What kind of algae do you want it to eat. I have a albalone that just go to town on the string and rough type of algae. Once that finish, it also munch on hair algae.

Have you tried a Foxface? I know it's not a Tang but it seems you are trying to get something that eats it. Everyone I have had have been veracious eaters.

I know you like to feed things but just dont pet it and you will be fine. Mine always hid when I stuck my arm in the tank didnt bother it, it didnt sting me. Heck i know somebody who was even bagging one up for somebody and it jumped outta the net into the sink, they didnt know it was venomous and just picked it up and put it in the bag like no big deal lol.

yeah. I thought about it before (got a thread about 'should I buy a rabbit fish' somewhere lol) and part of it was not liking the venemous part and part of it was about them not always being reef safe long term.

That aslo may bring up another reason for them not to be eating your alge lol. If they can pick from ribeye stake and brussle sprouts :) I know what one I would pick.

Chevron is my favorite. Of all the tangs I have had, the Chevron has been the best at cleaning up algae.

I hope you find one. All my tangs eat any and all algae it seems(except cyano but including diatoms, hair, all macros I have used etc.) I do believe that many of the tangs learned this behavior from my sailfin which was one of my first fish in the tank. My powder brown also seemed to like the algae over the frozen when I first put it in.
Another thing you could do to help them learn this behavior is to cut back on the feedings some.

Thanks for checking JT, you're so thoughtful! I spoke to somebody today that has kept a lot of tangs and I am actually pretty set on the Scopas (if tang at all) now.
I might go in on your group order and try a variegated urchin first before taking the plunge.
