Wow. I'd have never figured for you to get a pencil urchin Rob! You're getting pretty adventurous! lol
LOL! Well, I think that's what it is. Labeled "Rock Boring Urchins" on their site....but looks like a pencil urchin to me. I'm a dork though and forgot that they can sting and I was holding it and examining it....then later started reading about it and remembered they can sting. Anyone care to chime in on handling experience with these guys...? Do they really sting?
It looks really cool with the algae growth on it's spines.
I love urchins, just haven't had good luck with them staying away from my corals. I don't mind trying them out though because they are easy to remove. I have one from the coast in my sump, he's been there for about 6 months now and just cleans. He was responsible for mowing through some encrusting SPS. I kept him because he's a cool conversation piece when non reefers come over, something they can hold and recognize.
Here's the one I got from this order:

I got one a few of the pokier ones:
pincushion urchin below
The site said:
"You will have to trust me that these are only nice bright pink, purple, or dark pink colored urchins. Might not look great in the picture, but I am horrible with a camera. Beat the picture I have and I will refund the purchase price of your urchin."I was hoping for a little more noticeable pink than what arrived (the description sounded so pretty!). I am guessing they are tidal since they shipped without water. They haven't moved much so far so I am hoping they'll bounce back pretty soon and start eating! lol
They're pointier than the pencils but I can pick them up by hand. Spines are so short so that helps

Quick article with this quote at the bottom:
http://animals.jrank.org/pages/1886/Chitons-Polyplacophora-BEHAVIOR-REPRODUCTION.html
"Depending on the species, females either release their eggs singly or in strings into the water or keep them inside the special groove that separates the girdle and muscular foot. Eggs fertilized in the water usually develop into free-swimming, unsegmented larvae (LAR-vee) covered with tiny, hair-like structures called cilia (SIH-lee-uh). Eggs that develop inside the groove remain with the adult female until they become well-developed young chitons."

I am totally intrigued by the chitons -such prehistoric reef bugs!

If somebody did another group buy from them I'd be in for some more Nerites and Chitons. Those were both really great and already hard at work.
