So why is it that I don't seem to see many people building their own tanks, why is that? While I'm sure there's some important things that people should keep in mind, and of course it may not be much cheaper, so why not?

For small tanks, it isn't any cheaper, and for big tanks, it's just too big a risk if you get it wrong. The mfg will warranty a tank - so at least you are sure that it will hold water.

yeah, and he built it in a weekend? Crazy man that Ace is. :)
I called on glass, and yeah, it's just too pricey. a great place with cheap tanks is www.glasscages.com (http://www.glasscages.com)

Yeah, they do make nice tanks, and I love their stuff, just can't quite find good acrylic variety there for some reason... sizing sure, but not the same sort of variety they do for glass, if that makes sense?

I'm happy with the one I built and it was a lot less money to get exactly what I wanted. I did buy the glass precut from glass cages so that is one thing I didn't do myself.
The main reason I did my own tank was to get exactly what I wanted without getting jerked around in the customization process, but cost was also a factor. I asked for a Quote from AGE for a 30" tall rimless (42" X 72") and they came back with a quote for 24" tall rimless. At that point I decided to do my own as the price was already a little more than I wanted to spend and I could tell by the time I got it customized the way I wanted it they would be close to $9K with tax and shipping -- this was way more than I wanted to spend.
So far I am pleased with the result. I filled with salt water this last week and am curing dry rock in it -- no leaks and I love my custom waterfall external overflows. Also, no visible plumbing in the back as the overflows are full boxes.
