Finally cracked the box open tonight and tried to take some pics. Obviously, I'm still learning.

Next purchases will be more lenses, but I gotta start saving some change. $1000+ is going to hurt:cry_smile:. I'm thinking a 18-200mm zoom lense, then a micro lense for macro shots, then a dedicated 35mm. Any lense suggestions or other advice?

Any recommendations on a macro lens Erik? The 18-55mm kit lens gets me pretty close on some of the corals, and it's pretty sharp. But I need something that can get closer.

Yeah, this camera can make an idiot look like a real photographer. I pretty much keep it in the Apeture setting, so I can set the f-stop, and let it select the shutter speed. I can't wait to try and film the tank in 720p. The sample I shot today looked very good.

The 18-55 is a good lense to have with a 1.5 crop factor why not a 55-200 instead of the 18-200 to compliment rather than replace. On most zooms at the furthest and closest distance the image tends to be soft around the edges imo prime lenses have much better results more so than any zoom out there but thats a lot of lenses to carry around. Normally what I recommend is a good walk around lens (zoom)or 2, a macro, a micro, and a few primes (for family pictures, events). For the walk around lens take weight into consideration cause if its too heavy it will become a burden and the camera will be left at home more often than with you.

look into nikon reversing ring...they go for about 40 bucks and turns your regular lens into a macro lense by litterealy fliping it

12 bucks on amazon.

just check the filter size on the lens you would use and by the correct one...

sure beats spending 200-1000 on a macro lense

Choices, choices. I was thinking about using the 18-200 so I'd only need to carry one lens at a time. But, the 55-200mm seems to run a lot less $$$.

Thanks on the rev. ring idea Marco. I need to order a few filters, so I may just add that to the order.

Anyone use the 105mm micro lense?

55-200 telephoto has a focus distance of 3.1ft.(0.95m) so you have to be that distance or further for subject to be in focus. and at 200 mm trying to focus on a single subject image might get shaky.

I'm mainly getting 15-200mm or 55-200mm for general stuff. My wife likes to take nature photos, so she'll use it more than I will.

Still leaning toward the 15-200mm nikor model w/2nd generation VR. I'll get a separate micro for coral pics.

Marco, do you have any example pics taken with the lens reverser?

Wow, those look good! Since it'll be a while before I get another grand saved up, I'll get one of those.

From what I've been reading, the $200 200m lens is highly recommended. The $900 model was reviewed on one sight as the "fat prima donna" that didn't live up to it's price when compared to the $200 version.

I personally love the 18-200mm lens for an ALL purpose lens. Its great for all types of shots. I have had the 50-200mm lens and it is no where near as good as the 18-200mm. If you want to see examples of lenses a good place to look is ken rockwells website. he reviews all sorts of lenses and gives pros and cons for all.

That site is actually the main place I did all my research before buying the camera. He complained about the weight on the 18-200mm model. Did you have that problem also?

Personally, I'd only like to carry one lense at a time. So if you think the 18-200mm model is worth the extra price, I may just wait for that lense instead.

He really didn't complain about the weight, but stated that it was heavier than the 55-200mm, but you have to carry 2 lenses to match the 18-200mm so it doesn't really matter. I personally got rid of my 18-55 and 55-200 and just use my 18-200. and don't have to worry about losing a shot because I have to change lenses.

He just said that it was too heavy to carry around all day. Since my wife uses it more outside on trips, I was worried about weight issues.

But, it lets me replace the 18-55 like you mentioned. I personally don't want to have to change lenses either.

I'm a little late on this discussion but I'm actually looking at replacing my 18-105mm Nikkor kit lens and my 28-300mm Tamron with the 18-270 Tamron that is out. It has gotten really good reviews for a pretty good range of zoom. One less lens for me to have to worry about that way.

I owna Nikon D60 and I have the 18-55mm lens and the 55-200mm lens and I love them both. I have a camera bag so its not that big a deal carrying both lenses. And changing them out is super easy. As far as long shots go with the 200mm lens I have no issues with shaky pics. I use the VR feature and if the subjest is stationary such as a coral or person I use a tripod and wireless remote. I have gotten some awesome shots at the 200mm focal range of planes flying and you can get great detail. One thing that great about DSLRs with High resolution is you can get as close as you can with the wide ange lens (18-55mm) and get a great shot and then on your computer zoom in to 100% and crop your subject. Thats what I do and I have a 10MP camera and I get great detail with it. A true micro lens will allow you to get the hairs on a fly or extreme detail or a coral. I wish I had the money to spend on a true Micro lens. One day I will im sure. I love getting shooting the world of tiny! :D
