I got a Oceanic Illuminata 57g rimless, I love the size and look of this tank. Tank is 36x18.5x21. This will take me awhile but I think I have a pretty good plan. Sump and skimmer should be here soon, I'm going with a PM R30 sump with a reef octopus 110. I will use the mag7 I have for the return pump, and I have a rio 4h I plan to use to run 2 TLF 150 reactors. Desiding on lighting has been killing me, but I have a plan. I will run 5 evilc66 par38 led fixtures on a track lighting system. This will keep everything very clean and modern looking. Running the led's on a track system will make adding led's or even a MH pendant very easy. I plan to run a single MP40 pump.

That is a very nice looking tank. Once I get my army commission (hopefully in the next year - year and a half, I plan on going rimless but maybe not as big as you have or what I have. I was thinking something in the 20 - 30 gallon range. Is that tank starphire?

Love the look, very clean :)

I had some algae problem and I redid my rocks this week. Here is what I did...top down shot.

Tank is a little dirty, but I just did a water change and will take better pictures from the sides.

But doing this opened it up a bit and gave me more room to put items on the sand.

Dimensions 24 x 24 x 24

That is the perfect tank!!!! Daaaaaamn......
Mine is 36x18x25h.....and just loosing that 4 inches off the top would be ideal. not to mention the rimless and predrilled.
Best of luck on that beauty! i'm sure it'll look great.

Only question, is the rock you're putting in LR or just look alike stuff? It looks pretty similar.

Marco Rocks are dried out rocks. They just cook them so they are pest free. They are not DIY or homemade if that is what you are referring to. They will become live with time, as all tanks who start off with dry / cooked / uncured rocks.

I have purchased Marco Rocks and it is a great deal. Because they are dry, they are light and you actually get more for your money. 25 lbs of his dry rocks are more like 50 lbs of rock you would get at a LFS.

Plus they have great shapes and are typically very porous. Next time I start off a new tank, I will purchase rocks from them again.

The rock is dry cured rock, for the price I thought it was a great deal. No pest, etc. I got 50 pounds of rock and used about 40-45. The rock is nice, once seeded with some coraline, etc. it will look great.

Sun, 7th Mar 2010, 12:07 PM
The lights are japenesse Par38 spotlights refitted with cree led's. Very low power useage, plus for NPS tanks I love the spotlight look. It seems to really make blue and purple gorgs really pop when there in shadowed areas.

hahaha, but I wanted to be different. The bubble wrap is just in there for test fit. You know, a new tank and I dont want any scratches.

Thanks The HS didn't need to be that big, but it fits on the sump perfect. Plus I will never have to worry about overheating. I have ran it for several hours with no cooling fans and the emitter are right at or alittle over room temp.

If I deside to not go with GHL controller/moonlight, I think these par16 would work great. 5w 180 lumens 40 degree lenses. Plus they would work great with the par38's I will use for main tank lighting.

Looks great. Did you decide not to use the Par38 LEDs? I'm thinking of using 2 or 4 on my next tank as supplements to my ATI PM. Be careful with those TLF reactors, mine leaked and dumped a couple of gallons on the floor. Next time I'll grab a BRS reactor.

txg8gxp

No par38's on this tank. I wanted led's, but I needed something that cost less for now. Thanks for the info on the reactor, I'm not running the TLF reactor at the moment. I like the nextreef MR1 reactor, seems built well.

Then I desided to go bare bottom, and removed alittle rock. The tank now has a much more clean/modern look I'm going for. I like this setup alot better.

txg8gxp
Thu, 13th May 2010, 01:44 PM
It is a good idea, reminds me of a nest box for birds. hahahaha. So far the wrasse seems fine, but I know as I was removing sand the watchmen goby would lay on the last small pile of sand that was in the tank. If anyone is alittle stressed it is the watchmen for sure, hopefully he comes around or I will be looking for a new home.

Steven,
Is that a regular wavebox or a nano? Steve loves his wavebox on his 57g. the only flow except for the return which is not much. The set-up look good.

txg8gxp
Tue, 8th Jun 2010, 03:12 AM
I have the nano wave box and a max7 return. Because I'm going BB I want alittle more flow so I will add a sicce 3.0 or 4.0 return pump soon.

MRSBIGBIRD123
Tue, 8th Jun 2010, 03:20 AM
I know a lot of people don't like them and go for more aggressive random flow but I think Steve's corals are happier with the wavebox. He has some coral that we can actually see them grow. I have never experienced this before with the SPS but it is exciting to see. I am so proud of the job and success Steve has had with this tank.

txg8gxp
Tue, 8th Jun 2010, 03:25 AM
I love my wavebox, any large tank I ever build will have one. The oscillating wave it makes is great, there are no dead spots at all in the tank.

MRSBIGBIRD123
Tue, 8th Jun 2010, 03:32 AM
When Steve does his upgrade to the 120g, I will take over his 57g and be looking for a nano box myself. If I stare at it too long, it get sick to my stomach but the corals seem to be really happy. That is the ultimate goal in a reef tank, the corals being happy. I have been having amazing growth with some of my zoas in my RSM 34g but I'm just not happy with the lights. The lights are blah and the corals don't have the "pop" in color that they normally have.

txg8gxp
Tue, 8th Jun 2010, 12:57 PM
I think I will be adding a icecap moonlight bar like ace did. I have been thinking about one for awhile, but after seeing his pics I'm sold.

txg8gxp
Wed, 9th Jun 2010, 09:48 PM
Today I replace my mag7 return pump with a sicce 4.0. The added flow is perfect, just what I needed. It's helping to keep stuff off the BB. The pump seems to be built really well. The flow is great, from a mag7(700gph) to the 4.0 (950gph).

Great Job! Thought you would find this interesting....it was a thread over at nano-reefs with the same tank build as yours....he used the ecoxotic led light fixture....alittle cheaper than the AI but they aren't controllable except with timers...the outcome is still really nice and very clean looking...i'm still trying to figure out how a 57 gallon became a nano tank....only in texas however that guy is from Atlanta....

It looks more natural then the t5 for sure, and I finally have a nice shimmer in the tank :) Sorry for the bad pics. As you can see I need to raise the fixture up a few inches, it has alittle more shadow effect low then I want and the pic makes it look even worse then it is.

Ok, I have slowly move the rock rubble out of the center section of my sump. Now I have a frag tank :) Thanks to jack I have a really nice frag rack that fits perfect. I also added a maxijet900 w/ hydor rotating wavemaker. The rack will be able to hold 46 SPS frags :)

Great video.

Have you figured out if there's a way to select how long it goes on? I like to entertain the kids with it for a while but I don't need a 30 minute storm... ;)

txg8gxp
Tue, 25th Jan 2011, 05:12 PM
Looks like you can not adjust the duration of the storm. This version of the firmware is set to 20 minutes. Keep an eye out for new firmware updates, they may change it. If you would like, you can send in a request about having them make that change. If several people ask for it they will add it i'm sure

Great video.
