Thanks to Jarob I found these great instructions for making a clear mesh top:
http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=212941

The mesh is sold in $100 rolls but Davie sells custom pieces of it.
I ordered and he shipped right the next day.
The mesh is perfect. Much better than egg crate or bird mesh.
Following his instructions I was able to create a lightweight, light friendly cover for my tank that sits completely flush and unobtrusive.

(had to make some modifications because of my overflow and return on my non-RR tank)

I am very pleased with my purchase. You can find Dave's contact info in the instruction thread above.

Hey Karin,
I love the looks of your new custom screen tops. We have our own customized tops on our tanks that don't look nearly as slick as those.

We have a 20g hex that is open top and I cannot tolerate that for fear that the cats will decide to go fishing or the fish will decide to go carpet-surfing. I don't love the egg crate / gutter guard top we made for it, but it is effective nonetheless. Do you think Dave's design could be modified for a less uniform shape? Obviously the greatest challenge would be the angle of the corner brackets, since the 90 degree angles would be too great for the hex shape. Any thoughts on whether something else could be modified to serve that function?

I dont see why you wouldn't be able to cut the al. frame at any angle you need just like with trim for the house. It would not be nice and easy though.

Thanks. I had to modify the corners since screen usually are mounted on teh inside of the frame and for that I cut off the lip the pieces had on the inside so it basically was just a square (but tight fitting piece). That worked reasonably well even without glue.
Once you add the spleen it will get more stable anyway.
I would think you could cut tight fitting plastic pieces (acrylic?) at the correct angle and do it that way for a less square shape?
I can bring you a remnant of the screen frame when I pick up my gorgs so you can see what the inside looks like and get inspired of how you'd connect them...

Sounds good... I would love to see a piece in person if you can remember to bring it!

Karin,

Did he provide the frame or did you get that on your own?

oh and the frames come in brown, black, white and alu. I just chose alu because it matches my light fixture.
