I'd like to get an ID on this fella before I turn him loose in my tank. He hitch hiked in on some zoas so I'd like to make sure his diet does not consist of them. His antenna are red and he has whiskers coming off his body and other than that looks like a slug. Any help would be great. I'm going to look and see if I can ID him but if not, to the septic he goes!

While searching for an ID I found these beautiful nudis. Got any reference on that snail? Not that I don't trust you, I just like learning what ocean they are from, eating, mating habits. All the nerdy stuff!

Yea I agree with jpond83. I have at least 15 in my 29 gallon BC. They are super fast crawlers and do a great job cleaning. They are harmless and come in a variety of colors. They have a "cap" like shell that they can't really use for protection because its so small. If they are being chased they will loose their tail just like a lizzard to confuse the predator. I think they are cool little guys.

Cool! Thanks, now I'm just worried about him getting harassed in the tank. I have four hermits, a cleaner and a peppermint shrimp. Hopefully he can hide till the 29 gets cycled. I like how he drops his tail like a gecko. I don't know how many gecko tails I claimed as a kid but it sure was entertaining!

Stomatella varia (http://www.gastropods.com/2/Shell_2422.html)

Almost slug-like, but possessing an auriform, cap-like shell, individuals of Stomatella seem unlikely to be Trochoideans. However odd their appearance, their internal anatomy puts them squarely in this group. Stomatella individuals may reach lengths of about an inch and a quarter (3 cm), and as their specific name of "varia" implies, they may be almost any color, although gray, black, and mottled colors tend to predominate. They are quite good grazers, and also reproduce well in aquaria lacking hermit crabs and shrimp predators. Their shell shape precludes their retraction into the shell, but evolution has given them a rather neat way to escape many predators. The rear portion of their foot can break off, much like some lizards' tails, when they are threatened by a predator. The detached portion then writhes, and twists and otherwise distracts the predator while the snail, presumably, makes good its escape. Additionally, they also tend to be nocturnal and avoid a lot of visually-oriented predators in this way.

He should be okay. They are really fast when they want to be.
