I'm looking into getting a 23 gallon tank from glass cages and before I pull the trigger on anything I want to see what I should do as far as pumps and protein skimmers and what not. I always hear great things about Eheim pumps and was wondering what everyone's impression of the Eheim 1048 was. Too much or not enough pump for a 23?

Oh and btw the dimensions are 18x18x16 rimless

too much in what sense? What are your plans for the pump?

If you're looking to use this for in-tank flow (mounted in the tank like a powerhead) it might be a little too strong in direct current for needs -- but it would work absolutely perfect as a return pump from a sump in this size tank... It all depends on what your goals are :)

I would get a bakpak protien skimmer with biobale. This would prolly be your best bet for a small tank like that. you dont need to much filtration unless your planning on having massive bio-load.

IMO/E, biobale is nothing but a nitrate trap and a cleaning logistics nightmare. Who wants to pull plastic strips out of their skimmer to clean on a monthly basis? :)

For my money, more water volume ALWAYS = better, whether the sump is being used for further filtration methods, or just to provide a larger water volume. Besides, all the glasscages tanks have the option to come drilled with a nice glass overflow from the factory -- why not take advantage of it? :)

You can add a pvc maniflod(for use w/ media reactor, water change, etc) and a ballvalve (to throttle back some)if the pump is bigger than what you need.
