stacked rubble rock sump.........just as a pass through natural filter.
any reason to have a light it there with it?

Not unless you have macro. They are called cryptic fuges. This allows alot of sponges to grow and they in turn filter the water.

No light for the rr, yes to light with macro on a reverse cycle for the reason stated by gleclipse. A buddy one told me I had too much going on in one five (deep sb, macro, rubble rock).
So I changed my set up to run macro as a ph stabilizer on reverse cycle, deep sb in the large portion and in the final compartment a cryptic fuge with rubble rock.
If you're looking for serious nutrient export you want the macro. If you're looking for added bio filtration the rubble rock is great and cryptic really allows for a large populAtion of sponges.
Here's the rub, that rr fuge will give you an excellent detritus trap.
Pros and cons all around. Ping and a few others have threads here that are very informational.

I've since did away with the rr rock cryptic because of the detritus haven that it became.
