I have heard many times that ICE CAP is the best metal halide ballast. Why is that?

copy pasted from aquacave http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=870

This ballast will power any metal halide 250-watt bulb. It does not over-drive the bulb, so output will be at the bulb manufacturer's specifications.
By using a constantly changing, very high frequency, the ballast will light any bulb without flicker. Longer bulb life and other features makes this the best ballast for all metal halide applications. Does not come with Molex connector.

IceCap uses its unique, patented operating system, which allows you to save energy without compromising light output. By applying lower voltage across the lamp, energy consumption is reduced and lamp life is expected to be increased.

ICE Cap has been around around longer than dirt. So I guess there service and products must be good. I have always been a Coral Vue supporter but I understand there service is not as good as it use to be.

Sorry I for to mention Polkster

I have an icecap 400w and after running it 12 hours its warm but not very hot. I like it

Energy Savings of over 10% from High Efficiency
Longer Lamp Life due to constant output
Longer Ballast life due to low heat
Compact Size to fit most fixtures
High Frequency Operation is flicker & noise free
Savings on air conditioning costs

IceCap is just known for making some of the most efficient ballasts available -- not necessarily the best (many show strengths), but definitely one of the best. I've got the IceCap Reef Illuminations fixture, 2x250w halide, 2x54w T5, 2x30w LED... and I adore the thing. The biggest key, IMO, is that you'll want to get a digital ballast. Magnetic ballasts just don't carry the efficiency of a good digital ballast, regardless of manufacturer..

Icecap has the best warranty hands down of any lighting company I've dealt w/in 15 years. It doesn't hurt that their products kick arse.

Does anyone use the 250w de reeflux? I've heard the light color and par values were much worse than the single ended version.

That's what I thought.

I've been pretty happy with the phoenix 14K hqi, but I'm always looking to try something else.

No experience here on the 250's. Running 2x150 DE Reeflux 12K with some T5 support on a Current fixture myself. Wouldn't trade it at all. But I reef unconventional...each his own I guess.
