Ok i went from a 20l sump/ref to a DIY 55 gal/ref and my mangroves worked good in that shallow thank but now there not long enough to reach the bottom of the. So my question is if i plant the trees in the sand with the leave under the water will they grow out? Or will they die? I have herd that is not good for them but just wanted to get other ideas

Also you can notice a difference in the lighiting on each side of the tank. the left is 3000k and the right is 6500k. What one is going to grow better for me????

New sump with alot more room.

the leaves acn not be under water. Just keep them floating like you have them and place them further down when they're taller. :)

first thing first your light must be above the leaves if you do plant them and they need to be at least 40 watts of plant light in my opinion. I would use mud not sand and also clean the leaves about every water change.

Thanks for the input. I have two 90w bulbs feeding the fuge and i was planning on putting them higher then the leave but they dont reach if i plant them in the sand bed. when i bought them a year ago each plant had 4-5 roots and from the year in my old fug, they now have hundreds of little roots. Are they going to grow up if i plant them the way they are or die?

Well i just wanted to say my mangroves no longer have any leaves on them:angry:. I was looking in my tank and noticed a leave drifting around in my main tank????? Upon futher investigation i noticed that all 4 of the mangroves didn't have any leaves on them???? Upon asking my son what happen to all the leaves on daddys trees hes tells me "the hugga bed did it" for some reason i didn't believe it and he told me the truth. So now none of the mangroves have leaves. Before this each one had 6-7 each. Now what to do?

what's a hugga bed?
I'd keep them where you have them (not completely submerged and see if they rebound. When i bought mine I was told the leaves don't do well with salt creep on them and to frequently spray them with freshwater so when you get new leaves keep them clean :)

LOL sorry i put the hugga bed i ment to say the Hugga Bear

LOL the Hugga bear is a made up bad guy that if the kids don't listen he will come and get them!!! I know my wife does it. All just get the garden hose out and lay the beat down. LOL just kidding. Its like house plants with keeping the dust off them.

JT what kind of mangroves do you have? They don't like like the red mangroves people usually keep in their refugiums for nitrate export.

Yeah, my mangroves were just long stems w/hardly any roots and 2 had none! I just sunk them under the water and they have managed to sprout leaves out of the water and are now growing quickly! I never clean the leaves off and started out with 5 totally submerged plants and have 5 growing plants that now are reaching out of the sump. I also used sand. Once the roots started to grow, I put the stalk through eggcrate and now they are stuck growing on the bottom :)
