Lol. It took a long time (about 3 months) to really get them to peacefully graze together and roost in the same rock at night so the second pic is sort of special to me too. :)
The first one is Bruce trying to get the food right off the tip of the sea squirt. You could lead them all over the tank with the sea squirt. :)

How were able to determine their sex.

Sorry I'm sure you have posted the answer in a previous thread.

Greens/reds are easy to sex by the dorsal fin. Spotteds are a lot trickier.

FM Ultralife???

Not to hijack the thread, cool homosexual mandarins and all- Bob & Bruce. I know they are paired and your kids named them. Is Bob the female, then she could be Bobbie. Cool photos. :)

What does Ultralife do? Where do you buy it? What experience have you had with it....

Yes, greds ( that's short for green/ reds but that doesn't really matter now.....) are pretty easy to sex with their elongated "MAAST". Does that mean you were lucky with the spotteds or very maticulous?

It means there are two other Maastards who own Mandarins that I was hoping were girls and an turned out not to be... :)

Mike, UltraLife is just something from Fauna Marin to absorb the extra nutrients I put in the water with their liquid seafan food so that it can more easily be skimmed out

Thanks L.
It's tough to tell the males and females apart by body shape when you see them in the LFS because they all are so skinny but once they regain their body condition I feel I can tell males and females apart by body shape.
If you look at them from the top the female is more narrow and longish with more prominent eyes while the male is much more boxy looking.

I could tell by their body types which one was which, I just love fish couples! Chris is doing well by the way, even fatter than before! I'll probably be addicted to finding him a spouse as well....

Chris be careful with mixing them. In my experience the spotteds are much more assertive than the reds. Unless you feed a lot and very frequently there's likely to be fights. The spotteds and red/blues also have slightly different social behaviors. You might have more luck with a pair that "speaks the same language".
Favorite foods for mine are small bloodworms and prawn eggs but they also seem to go after the other stuff I feed the corals. I don't really do pellets.
