hi all, i am not sure if this is a right forum to post this thread...if so, please adviced.
i planed to set up a automatic water changed in my 90g; w/1g every 3 days or so on. by doing that i'll have to T-off a drained hose and put a silenoid in line (ATO type)...have a power strip which has a timer that'll control to drain and when it stops ,my ATO will fill the tank back up w/RO water. of course, i still have to maintain other supplyments too.
this method will help extended my water stay clean until my schedule to chanded water.
would it be a good idea?????? for 90g tank w/ heavy bio load.

If you're going to go through the trouble of setting up an automatic water change, why not make that your only method of changing water. I would suggest daily 1% water changes (in your case about a gallon) as long as you're automating, and then you would not have to deal with intermittent large water changes unless there are special circumstances.

Good suggestion dipan -- this would also negate a lot of the needs for any kind of dosing, depending on your coral load... Your biomineral balance would be replenished in small part on a daily basis -- 25-30% total volume every month or so..
Definitely a worthwhile project, if you're willing to take the time to do it right -- the stability and ease is hard to argue with! :)

I think what he meant, is the system would be more or less self-sufficient on your tank, unless something major occurred, that required a larger, more purposeful water change.. but either way, definitely a good project.. Document your work and share with the board! :D

Sounds like a cool project auto water changes patent that setup lol..Question though how are you adding the salt to the R/O water. I mean if your R/O water is already have the salt in it and is coming from a container mixed then defently cool. But if your just replishing with Freshwater then issues of course since everyday you would loose a gallon of mixed for a gallon of freshwater. But again if the new water is premixed ahead of the scheduled gallon swaps then COOOL
