Alright, I was hoping to wander around town and check out folks tanks while checking PAR on said tanks, but time is limiting me severely. Any extra time I find I'm putting into my family or tank build (serious time sink).

But ... I'd like to make the PAR meter available to charter members to use, especially since I'm not doing anything with it at the moment. When I start assembling my light fixture and start tweeking it, I would likely need to use it pretty heavily. For this reason I'd like to maintain ownership, but if it would be better to simply donate it to MAAST, then I'm willing to. Anyways, for anyone that's interested, PM me and you can come by and pick it up. If the mod's have a better system for sharing equipment amongst charter members, please let me know.

I would also like to see some pics of said tanks and request that anyone that borrows it post a pic here with a detailed description of lighting (fixture, reflector, bulb, ballast, height above water, tank depth) with PAR measurements listed in various locations on the tank. I'm open to other suggestions y'all might have.

txav8r has first dibs as he's been waiting for me to come by and measure his LED lit nano ...

It would be cool to see the numbers from your solar tubes. The meter is with Justin right now and he's going to pass it along when he's finished. I figure we can just pass it along. If no one else needs it the last person can drop it off with me or a LFS if the owners don't mind.

Justin and I will be meeting up Tuesday -- I should be done by Saturday-Sunday, whoever is up next just let me know and we can arrange something :)

Dipan -- thanks again for the generous offer... I can't wait to see the findings I get, and everyone else! It should be a prerequisite, if you're gonna use the PAR meter, provide some results (preferably charted out on a full tank shot :D) I know I will be :)

This is a great little instrument! I hope everyone will post their results so we can have our own mini Sanjay lighting guide.

My results are posted here:

Great idea, and id love to be in line. Somehow i can almost see my results! Im running a lonely 150 watt x3 using 14000K phoenix bulbs. on my 120 gallons. Certainly bluer then my old 10000k coralifes were.

With this information, how would one put together what corals should be receiving what level of light. Is there a cart, book, culmination of maast members findings? where we can move certain corals to other places in our tanks to take advantage of the par levels.

justahobby
Sun, 24th Jan 2010, 09:25 PM
I found a chart, but I'm skeptical and think it's very overrated. I burn coral with a lot less par than they claim are needed:

Wow, I think i just found my answer to my question that i just asked. A llittle searching located a great forum conversation between Anthony Calfo and other forum member off the marine depot site. If you care to read...talks about PAR/LUX and that there is no book to guide by due to so many lighting conditions changing for said coral coming from the ocean to our aquarium. Very interesting reading here guys. Helped me understand a lot more inreguards to lighting use.
Here's the link.

I would also like to be in line but don't want it for a couple of weeks. I have a temporary light fixture over my tank running MH 150w x 2 since one of my 250watters blew. So ...waiting on new lights. Might try and test both.

Mon, 25th Jan 2010, 10:48 AM
Cool. Looks like we'll be seeing lots of numbers soon ...

Maybe we should just leave it up to the person who has the meter to figure out who gets it next. Should be easy enough to figure out as long as anyone interested posts in this thread.

Yes, very cool of you! Can't believe I've been in this hobby for so long and never even carred to look at what my light was actually doing.

Chris....my fellow MAASTARD...I'm not sure I want to keep track of another list. I'm pretty slammed with checking that Frag program day and night.

I would be happy to sticky something for you....but Jack may have some ideas since he's the go to man for the library.

once the meter gets into the NE side (schertz, UC, LaVernia) i would like to compare the 96w CF i have installed to the retrofit 3w cree led system i made.
i would also be able to compair 40 and 80 degree lenses at various depths. (up to 26 inches) and at varying power levels (up to 1000 ma from each buck puck) i have a fluke 88 digital true rms multi-meter and could get some amp reading to each led.
i also have an inductive pickup amp meter that i could use for power draw readings from various lamps for comparison.

Hey guys. Was going over the list of potential borrowers and confused myself. Not knowing everyone by name yet, I came up with a list that may or may not be 100% accurate for myself. If no one minds, I wrote down the names of those who are interested in the order they made a request and this is what I ended up with.

The list is from the first person who received the PAR meter.

No problem. Never really used it much to need a battery change, but I suppose any grocery store or Radio Shack should have it if it's one of those flat round lithium batteries. I think most pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, etc) also sell them ...

Make sure your arm is not casting a shadow or you could attach acrylic using the attached screw. Other than that, its very sensitive so if you aren't pointing the sensor at the exact same degree in every new spot your readings may not graph very well

Got an email from Apogee today:

Dear customers, if you are receiving this email, you purchased an Apogee Par Meter from us between the dates below. We have just been informed of a recall by Apogee on these meters and the information for getting your meter fixed is below. Please contact Apogee directly about these meters. Their phone number is (435) 792-4700 and their email address for the recall is techsupport@apogee-inst.com.
Thanks you,

Kell Humber

From Apogee:
*
Apogee Instruments is committed to helping you make accurate measurements.* We recently determined that an op-amp in our radiation meters manufactured between December 1, 2008 and December 1, 2009 had an insufficient settling time. This caused our quantum, pyranometer, and UV meters to read high in high light levels. The meters are accurate from zero to 300 ìmol m-2 s-1, but are 5% high at 750 and 9% high at 2100 ìmol m-2 s-1. The affected serial numbers for your quantum meters, MQ-200, are 1001 to 1254.
*
To insure that your meters are as accurate as possible under all light intensities, please return it to us for a firmware update and recalibration. We will cover all shipping costs both ways. We expect to be able to return your meters to you within a few days after arrival. Please email techsupport@apogee-inst.com to coordinate the return. We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to continuing to work with you to make the most cost-effective measurements possible.

Sincerely,

Bruce Bugbee

It looks like BigBird was the last one to receive the Par Meter.

I have been in contact with stangchris who contacted BB and he agreed to drop it off at Gabe's Fish (with Gabe's approval). However Chris has not heard from him for some time.

Does anyone personally know Bird and can contact him regarding this piece of equipment? From what I understand, the Par Meter does not belong to MAAST, but to an individual who graciously lent this out to members.

The meter is mine. I was hoping this would proceed a little more quickly than it has from person to person without rules or anything like that, but perhaps it would be a good idea to limit usage to a week. That should be enough time to get what readings you want. You could also push yourself down the list if something comes up and you can't use it in a reasonable period of time.

Also, I haven't seen much in the way of readings. One of the requests I made before loaning this out, was that if you used the meter, you post up some numbers so other MAASTards can learn or at least get a good idea what light setup puts out what par on a certain tank. I hope folks can make some progress with this. I think Erik even offered to help with this part.

Let's keep this going please ...

I would have posted my readings but I learned almost instantaneously that it was pretty much impossible for me to get an accurate reading because I have a canopy that is hinged in the back. All of my lights are mounted to it, so when I lift the canopy, the halides go up as well. :( It wasn't that way on my 75. I may hinge the front, that would solve my problem!

If you mount he sensor to something like a piece of acrylic rod with a flat piece of acrylic on the end, maybe hinged, you could probably just set it in there and set the canopy down. The cable should be long enough ...

A bit more tedious, but you could get some measurements.

Gabe has accepted my request to be official Keeper of the Meter. When the person who has it is done, please return it to Gabes. That way we don't have time coordination issues.

Also, though I didn't feel the need to spell it out before, if you don't think that you can be done with the meter in 1-2 weeks AND get the meter back to Gabes in 2 weeks, please pass on your turn. It is not fair to everyone else waiting to use it.

Please also remember that this was started so that we can all learn more about lighting setups and SHARE with the community. Post up your readings when you're done. Erik has already offered to help people with the digital stuff involved in regards to getting numbers written on a JPG.

Now I just need to get off my lazy *** and build the LED cannons that I have been planning for over a year ... :)

Picked up the meter from Gabe this afternoon and wondering if it's calibrated properly since it was measuring 2,888 at the reflector for a 250 watt 14K Phoenix HQI metal halide on a Blueline 7 ballast but with the light at the surface which is 11" from the reflector I was getting 600 and at 14" below the surface (25" from reflector) I was only getting 200, probably right but sounds a little weak. The 160 WATT VHO's were showing 250 at the bulb :(. Won't be able to test the other lights until this weekend when I build a jig to hold them.

I was wondering the same thing Jose. I was measuring very low reading on my tank - 300 top of water; 150 middle of tank; 50 on sand bed. I ordered and installed new t5 ATI bulbs and ended up with basically the same readings.

I understand your concern. Do you have a basis for comparison, though? That's kinda the purpose of having this go around and for people to share their results. I don't think there is a calibration issue if you are getting high readings in one place and not further away. If photon flux measurement is valid at the bulb/reflector, then I don't know why it wouldn't be valid elsewhere. I mean, you don't have to input a "distance" from light source into the meter or anything. If it's measuring 3000 at the bulb, then I'm not sure why it should measure less than expected some distance away. Get my meaning?

The meter has been to Apogee last year for recalibration and that has been mentioned in this thread. There was basically a "recall" on them with free recalibrations offered. If consensus is that it needs to be recalibrated, I would be happy to send it back. I'm guessing it would take some time, though, like it did last year.

That kind of drop in PAR from top to bottom doesn't seem unreasonable, does it? How many T5's are your running?

I would trust the meter. I sent it in for calibration when I had it. I actually didn't get to use it because I sent it off right when I got it and it was shipped back to Dipan. That's why I never posted any results.

Dipan, I was just wondering since I didn't expect 2900 at the reflector (was expecting less) and then seeing it drop off so fast seemed odd but frankly I have no experience in measuring par nor do I have a baseline which is why I was asking. The meter is probably working just fine. I was impressed that the phoenix 14K were putting out more PAR then my 10K bulbs (2,888 vs 2,500). I have different setups to test over the weekend with different ballasts and different reflectors which should make things interesting.

I've got the meter, and I am working on the Dipan DIY plasma/led light. I am also going to make a proper acrylic mount for the light sensor, I just need to make it by Plastic Supply to get the pieces I need. I should be finished by next weekend, and I will post my results at that time.

I'm probably going to need the meter soon so I will have to temporarily suspend this program. I suggest that whoever has the meter finishes up quickly so that the rest of the folks on the list can get a chance with using it. It is taking quite a long time for it to go around and at this pace it will take one month per personon the list. Let's try to keep it moving. Try to be courteous and get it to the next guy after using it as soon as you can.

Not sure what's going on with the meter. Last I heard it was at Gabe's but not sure if he is still open for business. I dropped by a few months ago during the middle of the day on a weekday, but the place was closed up. If someone can get a hold of him and pick up the meter, maybe we can keep this going.

ok heres the lastest, i was able to track the meter down. i talked to Dipan and he has been nice enough to keep this going. dipan wanted to keep the meter at a LFS as before, i talked to Louis at Elegant Reef and he has agreed to help. may come up with new rules on maybe a small deposit, and a set time frame on how long you can keep it. as we iron out the guide lines they will be posted.

Thanks Chris. This is a great tool for MAAST, and I think a deposit is more than fair. Even a rental fee to cover eventual wear and tear....... Those meters aren't cheap! Thanks again Dipan for allowing us to use it

I would also like to use this PAR meter. I will be switching to LED's in November and would like to get a current PAR reading before switching over so I know what levels I need to be at after switching. I'd be willing to give a deposit/donate.

Last I knew it was at Elegant Reef. Ask Louis about it. He is trying to come up with a fair way of loaning it out. My original intent with this was for people to borrow it for a week max, but many have had it for much longer. He might ask for a deposit or something so that it comes back on time. Whatever the concensus is will be fine with me ...

Yes, Allan go straight to Louis.
I borrowed it a month or so ago. I did not write down numbers because I was a little pressed on time and was trying to get it back as soon as I could. I plan on getting it again from Louis so I can record my numbers over the length of the day since I run so many different programs on my Sols.
