View Full Version : What should I do?

I've got a pogoda cup coral that was my 2nd or 3rd coral I ever bought. It's hitting 15 years old and it's too big for my tank. It's just a standard green morph, but it has a lot of sentimental attachment.

It's 15 inches in diameter (bigger than a dinner plate) and takes up about a 1/3 of my available space in my 90 gallon.

I'm not sure if I should try and sell it, donate it to some place like Sea World, or something else. I'd even thought about donating it to Maast for a raffle or some other thing that could raise $$$ for the club.

What should I do?

Don't raffle it.
It sounds like you love it.
You will feel much better if you get to hand pick the new home for this coral.

It's made it through all my mistakes and tank crashes in the beginning years. Plus, it's sitting in prime tank realestate right now.

But, mainly its just outgrowing my tank and blocking a lot of flow. I can put it in my wife's 2' cube tank (she won't be happy), but it's had bryopsis in the past, so if I put it there, I can't move it back or sell it.

I would find someone I trust on MAAST, or set up a new tank. The new tank would be kept simple and be dedicated to that coral only. After 15 yrs, I might even let it sleep on my nightstand. I would be infuriated if I gave it to SeaWorld and someone with a degree in marine biology killed it.

that is a good idea justin, maybe a tank for that coral and a very specific type of fish...

And I know JUST the tank you need!

Actually, I'd suggest you find someone with a big enough tank that can take it, that you trust.

My last line sounded too harsh. Let me expound by saying I would instinctively hold Seaworld to a higher expectation than a trusted friend. Not that it's the right thing, but how I assume I would react. With a friend you can stop by and monitor its condition, intervening if necessary.

Do you have old and new pictures to show its growth I could see?

:D
You know I was just thinking the other day that you and E are another dual MAASTard household (and therefore without a nay-saying spouse) - you could get Bill's tank, consolidate your little tanks AND adopt CoryDude's Audrey coral. It would be perfect!

My wife's not in the nay-sayer crowd, but even she laughed at me when i mentioned Bill's tank... :D

Trust me, If we lived in the same household I would have much less chance at buying a 200 + tank. It's bad enough having her find coral in my tank after I told her I am too broke to go out :blushing:....... "No honey, I just moved it into better view"

I was more interested in seeing the growth of this thing lol. I have an open brain coral which was my first and I intend on keeping it for just as long. CoreyDude's post is inspiring.

Justin,

Here's a pic from last year. I don't have much in the way of growth pics. I can tell you the coral was about 4-5" when I got it.

WOW, that is too cool!!! What a centerpiece. I've always been a fan of a few larger corals vs. a tank full of frags. I see what you mean about prime real estate.
