Hope not to sound stupid but is it possible for a chalice frag without an eye/mouth to survive and grow an eye or will it die??? I have never fragged any of my chalices and just curious.

i think it is possible, but not as likely to survive as frags with at least one eye(mouth)

Are you getting ready to frag??!!? Before you frag make sure you have a dremmel tool. Use the thinnest blade and do make sure you get at least one eye. Place the new frag in a low flow/shadded part of your tank. I would feed it once a day until it heals. Chalices are best mounted on flat disc. Good luck!
P.S. if you frag that acid trip put me down for one.

LOL. The acid trip is not quite ready to frag but it is alive. It is the slowest grower I have and barely has 2 colors (red and purple). I've had it for a long time and it has yet to grow another eye. Other people that have it are experiencing the same growth rate and same colors I have so that is the only thing makes me feel like it is legitimate. They say it needs to get 3 in before the spectrum of colors come out. My kids will be in college by then!! I have a few other chalices and my most recent aquisitions are soooo small it is hard to tell if there is an eye or not.

It is possible - most of the cases of survival have been mouths that were already there, but uncolored. I will try to remember the article or dig up a link for you. I was thinking of fragging one of my other chalices and ran across a discussion about this subject.

I have only one chalice, Hollywood stunner that I got from Giau. When I fragged it back a few months ago, I would make sure that I got at least one eye. Then as everyone above stated I glued it to a flat plug and put it in a low flow area. Initially I put it up high and it started to lose color but then I moved it down low just in time. They healed up greatly and I'm about to do some more. I think tho the chalice I have is a fast grower compared to others.
Heres a pic of the two frags one has over 6 eyes (started with only one) the other is over 15 eyes (started with about 5 or so) They were not growing at all until I moved them down and in low flow. I think I was burning them.
I am starting to really dig the chalices so I you do frag some and don't have some Hollywood stunner, let me know I n I will frag you a piece.

I asked that question of Calfo at TMAC. No, you don't have to have a mouth but its better to have one.

so.. this sounds like a good place to ask. Has any ever grown a chalice under pcs? I have a bc29 and would really like a chalice. I don't want to go down that road if it won't work though.

If you want I could babysit your acid trip in my tank for awhile just too see if it grows any faster over here. j/k. well...not really.I always try to make sure theres an eye when fragging chalices. Many times I have had incidental chips /slivers dna sample sized pieces survive and grow just fine.In fact I have three such teeny weeny pieces from a watermelon I fragged last week that are doing fine.

Natedogg...My first chalice was grown in a biocube 14?....Every chalice has different likes with regards to lighting. Some like low light and some high. Growth rate could be impacted as well but it is possible. There are very reasonable frags you can test the waters with and if it doesn't work, I'm sure someone here would be willing to buy it or take it off your hands if you see it isn't doing so well. Also remember regardless of what conditions you have, some are slow growers to begin with. My Bubble Gum monster is a FAST growing monster but my Bazooka Joe not as fast and the Acid Trip even slower than that.
