cleaner clams

I'm going with a different direction with my fuge. Not using my skimmer, want a more natural way of doing things. So I'm looking the Cleaner Clams. Wondering if anyone have some for sale or where may I purchase them for a good price.

Newby move, but this summer I bought six (what I thought were cleaner clams) from HEB and put them into the tank. One didn't make it, and I've since found two open shells. The other three are still moving around the substrate doing whatever it is that they do.

Obviously I used the wrong kind of clam. Wouldn't oysters work as well?

i caught a few a long while back Moe but from i saw lots didn't like the move and died and the ones that did make it didn't last long because my tank "crashed"

the ones you buy online are colleted from colder areas and they dont last long i would try to get the ones from CC, port A, SPI since its warm there. Be ready for the internet police to get mad about you collecting them ( but it is legal to get them)

it seem that we are living in the big brother era lol. If someone make a trip to port a I'll definitely hitch a ride. But then again the cold would probably keep me from going into the water since I got to use the warm weather.

The ones from HEB will do fine in a tank. They are from the upper east coast, but the water temps in those bays gets to 80 in the summer. So, that means, buy them in the summer. You will need to keep an eye on them though, and remember, if they die and you don't find them, much of the benefit you purchased them for will be back in your tank...

funny I remember seeing them in the HEB in DeZavala, and thought to myself hummmmm. I check them out they might be cheaper then what other site are asking for. thanks

if your going to order them online then i bet it would cost less to drive out there get them and come back

Just monitor these guys for a while - they die, it's going to pollute your tank. Remember, you are taking these guys from the low 30s to the 70s. Quite a shock... They should be very slightly open (most people will think they are closed) when left undisturbed (enough to get the edge of a knife in them. Thump them, and they should squeeze closed - you'll never get a knife in them.

BTW, they are MUCH better eating than oysters - as much as I like oysters. A heck of a lot easier to open, too.

I spent about six dollars on six of them from HEB. I didn't acclimate them as slowly as I should have. That's probably why two of them died.

Within moments of setting them onto the sand bed they stuck their 'tongues' out and buried themselves. I put one on a rock and he tongued himself off the rock and into the sand. I got the white shelled ones, not the black ones.

On top of temperature, also remember that these guys are often grown in bays, where the salinity is less than the ocean. They ARE found in inlets, where the salinity is the same as seawater, but just remember...

Be ready for the internet police to get mad about you collecting them ( but it is legal to get them) I found one of these in Rockport fishing lastyear, the water ws real clear and we were wade fishing and I collected about 20 or so hermit crabs and then spotted a clam somehow, and brought them home. Mine buried himself in the sand right away and lasted some time, but I think my Niger Trigger got ahold of him maybe cause I just found an empty shell lying in the tank one day.

yeah i got some and they also have some from the coast for .59 cents which I got I'll let u know how they work out.
