I have had these for at least 8 months, and for about the last two months they havent opened. They puff up, but never really fully open. What could be wrong with them?

Have you verified your salinity and alkalinity...... really low magnesium seems to affect these also. Do they still open at night??

Cheers,

do you feed them?

Are they next to another coral that might be messing with them? And how old are your lamps?

Mine looked pretty sad too. Allan mentioned to feed them at night and that seemed to have them perked up.

You know, now that you mention it, my krypto canes don't open with the same ambition as my teal canes. The teals looks like a fuzzy ball when they are open while the krypto guys only seem halfway interested in what I offer them. They are only open at night in my tank though, and at least half to 75% are ready to eat when I feed them.

I've had to move mine because of one my BTAs rub against it. The bright green pulled back to the point where the skeleton was visible. Has this happened to yours? That would definitely point to an aggressor in the area.

Any pics or particulars on water quality - lighting - flow?

Mine sit at the middle of my 90G under t-5's in a low flow area. That seems to be the best combo for my nuclear green candy canes.

My kryptos are pretty hardy but they almost perished when I had them under PC bulbs in a 24gal Nano.

Then I moved them to a 75g frag tank with T5 bulbs and they did ok. They are now in my 144 under 250w MH 20k bulbs with LOTS of flow and are near the surface...they are rocking now and have been growing super fast. I get a new head or two every month. I started with 2 heads and now have 10. They are super fluffy looking and the tentacles are out all day and night. I do not spot feed.

I think kryptos like intense lighting and lots of flow in comparison to the other candy canes... at least mine do.

I lost the colony about 2 years ago, but for about 3 years I had a colony of nuclear greens that would produce 3-5 heads a month.. I kept it at the top of my rockwork, like Rob, and target fed it mysis once a week or so. Lots of flow, right under 4x39w T5 lighting, and the things grew like crazy. At one point about 3 years ago, Aquarium Designs had a colony of it from me that they fragged several times to the best of my knowledge..

These are mine in my tank. I am going to frag a couple heads and put them higher in more flow to see if I get a difference out of them. More than 2 people having success in high flow / high light can't be wrong. I do feed mine regularly w/ soaked mysis so that is a common factor.

Different strokes for different folks. LOL. Yeah I saw that yours were low flow and not exactly intense light... but mine did horrible in that scenario...maybe the spot feeding keeps yours happy.

Let us know how they do...I'm sure they will have to be acclimated again though.

The biggest difference I've seen depending on tank placement is the growth of the heads themselves... Mine were always of the very small, tight variety, and rarely grew the 'upside down bell' shape at the top of the polyp... Seems like it would make sense that if its not recieving the volume of light it wants, it would transform its shape to collect what it can.. Of course, thats purely theory based on observation :)

I feed all my corals Phytoplankton. What else should I feed them to help. I also had them at the bottom of the tank. Im gonna move them tothe top and also around some good flow and see if that helps them out.

I feed mine chopped shrimp/scallop/krill and a smattering of mysis shrimp. they eat a lot.

phytoplankton is useful for your live zooplankton in your tank as well as your soft corals. LPS coral would probably prefer zooplankton to eat.

I would feed them some of that, but I havent seen their tenacles in a while. They did look better today though

That sounds serious. The only time mine have done that is during a little spat with a neighboring BTA.

I have had them next to a coral that isa little similar, I forgot the name of it though. It could be messing with it, I moved it to the other end of the tank, so Ill see how it goes now.

Well, I learned something today on this thread, and that was that these guys like more light. Mine only open at night, and even then not fully like the teal ones. I've moved mine up in the tank (pity too as space is limited) and they seem a bit more inflated. But this morning when I fed them, same thing only a few were wide open, a couple were half open and the others didn't even bother.

You may have to wait a few nights and see how they do in their new location.

mine have spurts where they don't open all the way and then they will all open on a regular basis.. don't we all have mood swings?:) They really like it when I turn of the pumps and shower them with cyclops.
