View Full Version : Stating the Obvious: Tiger Cowries are NOT reef safe

A LFS sold my wife a Tige Cowrie a few months back under the guise that it was a queen konch. At first it was a great algae eater, then it grew. These are not reef safe, which we recently found out. It killed our Scolymia in one night, and was trying for our BTA last night (which is funy because we have a Condy too, and I figured it would go for that first).

Anyways, had to exile the guy to the intake part of the sump until I get rid of him. Cool looking snail, which is why we kept him *hoping* that he would mysteriously keep up his reef safe habits.

That scoly was $90 too... :( That's what I get for not paying attention!

That's too bad because I love how pretty their shells are. Thanks for the info.

I hope no one takes you seriously.

There was a member that had one once before...he may still have it. He was an experienced reefer but... yeah... I don't think I would want to keep something that could kill me so easily.

Oh boy, yes. I was kidding of course. You'd be better off to eat the cowrie yourself than to get an octopus that can kill the cowrie and YOU!

then when you want to rid of the octopus, get a mantis shrimp

Nice...then eat the shrimp. Couldn't think of anything that eats mantis shrimp besides some humans.

Can some one find a you-tune video of a Mantis and Blue Ring going at it? I saw something once before but can not access you-tube.

Haha! Make sure you post pics. Also get ready to never see it...they hide and that's all they do. LOL! The dude that did it on here back in the day put it in a small nano. Wish...I could find it...maybe it was deleted for safety reasons. LOL!

The blue ring octopus sounds great for a fishy/evil husband/perfect crime novel!

Rob, if I remember correctly, that thread got locked/deleted because a flame war broke out regarding whether or not anyone SHOULD keep a blue-ring.

Man, I had no idea that octopus existed. However, I think I will dispose of my cowrie to a more loving home... should be great in a FOWLR tank.

Karin, Don't you remember the Bond movie [link]that played on the word "octopus" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086034/)[link]? The titular character had one.

Man, I could have saved you some time on that one. NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU..... (there is NO sex, NONE, in the champagne room. NONE) TIGER COWRIES ARE NOT REEF SAFE.

LOL Mine absolutely loved my zoanthid collection. Ate my only Darth Maul. $%^#$%$^$%#

That was just the start.

It got a good portion of my zoas too, but did not make any of them extinct!

I feel your pain. I fuged mine, but it ended up dying. Not sure why, but it LOVED the fuge. It would cruise around all fast with it's trunk all extended. Very cool, and I will have another, in my fuge. :)

That is facinating. I would never be sticking my hand in that tank.

Come to think of it, I am not sure I want to get in the ocean near Australia... they have a lot of deadly sea critters there. Box Jelly Fish, Blue Ring Octopus, some other peanut size jelly fish... makes the mantis shrimp seem like a massage therapist

That's the one. Crazy. Man, that was an expensive fight. Kind of sad though. Obviously the keeper knew what they were doing when adding the additional predator.

Ouch!!! I hate when pretty things take a leap into "no no" land!

So what are you going to do with it Phipp? Maybe the LFS will be cool if you call them?

I felt sad for the octopus too. No wonder they have to develop some kind of defense mechanism. :(
