View Full Version : Couple fish with ich... fish affected by loud noise?

So this is crazy but I can't figure what's going on...my tank parameters are in check. My purple tang and kole eye have ich.
I have never had a problem with ich in the past and I have narrowed it down to two things:
1) My temp... has been unstable the last few days with 5+ swing... I added another heater to help stabilize the low temps
2) This one is going to sound crazy but I think the ich could have been caused by the stress my fish may have gotten as a result of the LOUD Karoake playing over the last 3 days (continuous play). The tank and PS3 are in the same room...living room.
Your thoughts...?

I would have to hear you sing to determine if it's bad enough to cause ich! ;)
A 5 degree temp swing sounds like a lot though

i agree with karin, probably the temp swing.
cant comment on the karaoke, as my singing would definitely cause ich at least :lauging:

the tangs are stress due too no play time with COD
but i would assume the temp swing .... my hippo is acting up also and all i can think of is the temp

I'd also agree with the temp swings - but the noise could also be causing stress.

My hippo has been scratching itself the last couple days, also trying to keep my temp up and stable. I haven't been singing to my fish though... Although I think I've gotten sponge bob addicted to G&R.

I would think the loud noise could be stressful. Think about the thump, thumping of deep base. Loud noises or music could cause vibrations, which might be felt in the tank. Also if there is a lot of different activity in the area around the tank(that part of the room being used more, a lot of people coming and going near the tank etc), the movement might be stressing or scaring the fish some too. Hopefully your tangs will be alright..

I am thinking both the temp swings and the noise might be affecting them. Remember fish have a lateral line that detects movement and vibration in the water. The vibrations from the sound could be transfered to the tank. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses. I was just curious what everyone thought. I really hope these two pull through. The rest of the fish are not being effected by the ich.
Figures it would be my two favorite fish. I'm keeping them fat and they are doing fine otherwise. Just did a small water change.

Both environments might cause the ich problem, but who cares? After multiple ich outbreaks (pretty much every tank I've ever owned) I learned one thing. Take them out and QT them! Oh, and UV sterilizers are the bomb. Otherwise, you’re taking a chance of losing everyone. I will never take that chance again…….with one exception.
You have to know your fish. As you gain experience, you learn the way fish behave and know who the tough guys are that might live with or fight the parasite. I’ve had a couple fish for an extended time that made it through ich, but two were removed from the tank and one still lives with it. My Hippo always has a few spots on him, but presses on with life. Otherwise, I would never take the chance of losing my fish to ich.
Robb, I know you were just asking if sound or temp can cause ich, which seems highly possible….and I know that you have a lot more experience than me, but I just don’t want anyone to take this parasite lightly. It’s freaking deadly and has caused me a lot of money and grief. I hope they pull through and none of the other guys get infected.

At the moment i have a large sheet covering the front of the tank to give the fish some privacy for a couple of days. It seems to be working along with stabilizing the temp. Both fish were covered in white spots and now just have a few. I'm sure all of my fish have ich now but it was only affecting the Purple and Kole tang. I've also allowed the glass to grow algae for the last few days to help add an additional food source to please them along with keeping my hands out of the tank.
Keeping my fingers crossed and fish pleased...

Rob, this happens to me everytime my temperature swings. The best thing you can do is stabilize the temperature otherwise they will just get worse.

Thanks, Jose. I got it down to a 2 degree swing now...which is what I always aim for...so I hope things will stay put.

If you need to borrow a heater I have a 350 & a 500 watt you can borrow.

Thanks, Jose... I think I'm good right now with the two I have added. I will keep you in mind if things begin a problem again with temp. Thanks.

I feel your pain Rob. I had inadvertently unplugged my heater on Christmas Eve at the same time I left the house without flipping the house heater on. When I got home Christmas night my tank was sitting at 69. That's a 10 degree drop for my tank. That and low alk damaged some of my favorite coral. Having the right sized heater (plugged in) really goes a looong way to making inhabitants happy.

Oh that stinks. I was just thinking that I couldn't really tell a difference between running my new media reactor and not running it when I realized I had never plugged it in... We'll see how it does now that it's plugged in.
Hope everybody's fish and corals recover ok.

:) It happens to the best of us..... but it always seems to be the worst timing.

I'm back on track. Just took the sheet off today and everyone looks great. The Kole has completely recovered (Karin will be happy as am I) and the purple tang has a few small spots left.
Tank has been stable for 2 days 76.5-78.5. Summer months it stays 78-80.
Thanks for all the chimes.

Oh...my tank is a bit of a mess though with all the feeding I did over the last few days to keep the fish happy!

Loud noise will cause vibrations in the water. However, to fish, it will be no more than current changes. No artificial current provided in a closed system will ever match that of a "true ocean environment." Over how many hours is the 5+ temp change? If over one or two hours that could be the cause. But if it is AM to PM and gradual it could/could not be the issue. I would bet it is the additional motion/activity around the tank. The sheet is a good move. Let us know how it goes.

Cool, I learned in this thread that a sheet might really help. I knew about killing lights, but good idea on covering the tank up as well. Glad things are looking better man.

YAY!!! Moby is doing great now and his friend is Mr. Purple Tang...LOL! Moby is the only fish in the tank with a name. LOL. Thanks to you. :)

Thanks. Yeah, I thought it was a good idea, my guests thought I was a bit crazy, but it helped and my fish got through the worst part. I just needed a way to give them some peace while not kicking the company out and I didn't want to affect the corals much by turning the lights out...plus they could still see all the action in the living room.
I know that stabilizing the temp also had to help along with the small water changes and extra feeding.
Anyways... happy camper here. I hate ich and these fish looked bad on Friday night when I first noticed everything. They responded well though!!!
I also want to note for ich professionals, I'm well aware that ich is still in the system and my fish will be living with it and that the things I did only helped the fish and did nothing to remove the ich.
