Experts...I have some corals and I am not sure the "correct" name of some of them. I know Zoanthids are usually named whatever the person has them wants to call them like "Jelly bean green sore big toe people eaters", but I need to learn the true names of what I have. I have enclosed pics... "Learn" me something.
Sea Fan?

can we all play or only the people that actually know stuff?
I'm guessing at #2 green flowerpot (http://www.asira.org/goniopora), not very expanded though and #4 trachyphyllia (http://www.asira.org/trachyphylliidae)

first one looks like red grape caulerpa, a macro-algae
second one is a goniopora - flowerpot that is not open fully
third one - sorry dont keep up with all the names for zoas
fourth one - trachyphyllia - open brain

Now if I understand this right Goniopora is labeled as : Extremely Difficult requiringMedium light has a medium aggression due to far reaching sweepers and a very poor hardiness? The pic shows it not fully open but oooooh man it does open and looks beautiful.

saltier, my responses have asira links in them. Following their recommendations has worked well for me. I have a small flowerpot frag that's doing really well for me but it is also aquacultured from a strain that seems to have done in aquarium care better than others.

This is a very cool thread. Add more, keep it going! I'm horrible with names, this makes it interesting and memorable.

The zoanthids with the orange in the middle are called Eclipse or ice burg zoanthid (need a closer pic) is the ring blue or white?. I need a better picture of the other paly or zoanthid.

if it opens like this, then i would say you are doing ok.

if the polyps shrink down and the whole thing inflates - ever - it usually means it is getting too much light and has a buildup of oxygen inside its tissue from too much photosynthesis. if this occurs for very long or very often, the internal tissue is damaged and it will decline until it dies.

Wow Ace, that second one is gorgeous. What is it?
On the purple one I have no clue. I've been reading up on Gorgs and Dendros and saw an article in coral magazine on somebody who's had success with carnations long term and he feeds them every 2 hours. That's too much even for me! lol So I have no clue about carnations. If that picture was black and white my guess would have been chili coral with polyps out but not fully extended. Of course chilis aren't purple and yellow...

it really does look like a carnation in form, not like the chili i have pictured below
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/cuttle%20lagoon/DSC05815.jpg
the polyps on the purple/yellow one dont open up into big stars like the chili, they are tiny little fuzz balls when they open.

WOW Nope it is not that open!!! I just got her today though so I have it on a rock ledge not in direct blast from my T5's but it does get good water flow so I will keep you posted as the time goes on.

Wow, interesting. Is this true of anything? Everything I read stresses more and more and more light, never thought of having too much.

Some are light blue and some are white also.

some corals can take all the light you can give them, but others will be damaged by too much light. goniopora and elegance are the main two that come to mind in the more sensitive category. some blastomussa can also be less tolerant of too much light.

Yay! Prizes. We should do this with prizes!
That looks amazing. If you hadn't hinted that they usually don't look that way I would have never guessed it. I had to take a really close look at the base. Of course it helps that I really love some of your coral/invert choices. In fact should I ever strike it rich I'll hire you to jsut do my next tank complete with stocking it! LOL
You'll need to reveal some of your blue thumb secrets :)

I went over to Gabe's last week and he had two of them. He was telling me about them along with some other dude that looked kinda like Eddy Vedder. They looked totally bad *** and I wanted to buy one but they were kinda pricey. I tried to talk Gabe into fragging them, which he said he might if they stick around for a month. So no one buy them! Hehe.

one step ahead of ya gabe.....

cut one big branch off of that colony a day before taking that pic because it wouldnt fit there. both have been open and happy since the day after i cut it. i also cut a small nub off to start a frag for the frag program. it has not opened since cutting three days ago, so we shall see what happens....

Cool let me know how that works for you .. Did you glue the sponge ? Just wondering how the sponge reacts to fraging or frag glue..

From what I've been reading it's the red sponge that's more likely to die than the zoa part. The zoas even survive for awhile on a dead sponge. Not really useful info but I thought I'd throw it in there anyway ;)
