i have had this tank for several months and have never seen this worm.
its about 10 inches or so long and black, smooth and without any other defineing charactereistic. should i remove him while i can. or is it just a type of peanut worm?

thats the best i could do quickly. i was in a "RAW" camera format and will need to resize pics to post online. now that i think about it... it is most likly over 12 inches long. no large mouth. looks alot like a night crawler only black and saltwater.

Not sure from the pic. But, it's likely not doing anything particularly beneficial, and may be the opposite of that. No reason I can think of to keep it. Wear gloves.

If you manage to pull it out, put it in a zippy and I will try my best to pick it up tomorrow. Dead or alive I would love to study it.

Careful they can be poisonous.

wiki says:
In some families, it is armed with a sharp stylet which may be poisonous, while those that lack the stylet often use a sticky secretion on the proboscis to entrap their prey. The proboscis is wrapped around the prey, which is normally other invertebrates such as crustaceans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crustacean) and annelids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annelid) and can be many times larger than the nemertean itself, and the prey is then stabbed repeatedly with the stylet until dead.

and the prey is then stabbed repeatedly with the stylet until dead.

made me all woozy just reading that. That's terrible. Who wants to be stabbed to death by a black worm.

Was it out while the lights were on? If so, I would guess there's a better chance of it being predatory. Animals lacking defense tend to be far less brave, hence all the pod activity after lights out.

If you want it out of your tank you will need to set a trap. Pulling on it will only break it and probably not kill it.
