Buy used stuff on here. I would not recommend trying to revolutionize the lighting industry for tanks by attempting to find the "cheap route". :)
You just can't skimp on lights or skimmers. That's a golden rule.
BTW, I think maybe ten people have posted about this topic since I have been on here. So don't feel silly. :D

I use them for fuge lights. They sell the reflectors for cheap. Definitely not really an option for a display tank. Those bulbs won't penetrate much into the water. They work great for macro though. The bulb I picked up is about 95watt.

thanks guys, i changed my mind about keeping corals since my work, rodeo(i team rope), and school schedule are gonna be pretty hectic next year so i was just lookin for something to put over for cheap that will just grow some cheato i plan on throwing in the corner of the tank. keeping corals just isnt an option since im not gonna be taking care of it as much im just gonna have my 16 year old sister take care of it test it and doing water changes.

These flood lights are YELLOW! So if you want a display of any sort don't use them. They are best used in a stand... out of sight. They are ugly too.
You could get a cheap PC light fixture with actinics and moonlights, that would be cool and give your macro tank multiple lighting effects.

yea even a floodlight on a refugium i think is a little overkill. it doesn't take much to grow greenery in a tank. like everyone said go with the flow and get something at least made for reef tanks. Odyssea lights aren't to shabby in my opinion.
