Anyone have any recomendations for a return pump that will last a while and little maintanance. Any suppliers to recomend for the pump? Little giant or Iwaki or....? Thanks, Carl

Those are both good solutions. Looking for an external pump, right?

Here's a funny story about Pan World:
They apparently make the Coralife Turbo Sea Pumps. Flow rate and specs are identical and I just picked up a used Coralife Turbo Sea from the Zs and the label on the motor housing didn't even have the Coralife Model on it -it had the equivalent Pan World Model on it. So they're not trying to hide this very much...

Haven't ahd a chance to try it out yet. I've heard good things about Blueline too.

Another vote for Pan World. Blue line pumps also look like Pan World and there ballast look a lot like Coral Vue? Coral Life is more expensive because they add an extended warranty.

Mag Drives work great, and are reliable, but they're far from the most efficient bang-for-the-buck. I would probably go Pan World or Iwaki over a MagDrive for an external application..

Marine Depot will not warranty the mag pumps if you run them externally. I ran a mag 18 on a Oceanic 75g for years externally. When I sold the tank the person who bought it from me replaced the impeller and had a issue with it leaking so I sealed it with a high grade silicone and it is still going. The mag 18 I had did not pump 1800 GPH, it was more like 800 at a 5' lift.

This leak is common with Mag pumps run externally - they seem to "swell".

ReefCube: You seen all the recalls recently on the Red Dragon line? Broken titanium rods, rusting out impellers.. several major manufacturing flaws on several products... its a promising line, but I'd go elsewhere at this time..

Stay away from the mag's if you're looking for flow. Alton's right. I just put a mag-12 as a return on my 90. The specs said 800gph at 5', but I measured it and it was closer to 600gph. They are very quiet when used under water. But can't handle head pressure.

I've bought 2 iwaki's in the last 10 years. One's used as a spare. Both (40rlt) still work and will each put out about 750gph at 5'. They're not the quietest pump out there, but very very reliable.

I like the Mag pumps for in the sump pumps, but they do create more heat than external pumps. For external i like Panworld/Turbo Sea and Reeflo. I've had issues with Rio pumps catching on fire and a Dolphin Ampmaster with the seals wearing out after 16 months.
