I am looking at stocking my 42 gallon tank. I don't know what to get. First of all, I put a rocky substrate instead of sandy (bad move). Will gobies, jawfish, or blennys do well in a rocky substrate? Next, it is small so I don't know what fish I can put in. I would like some wrasses, but hear they jump a lot. My other option is some more rare damsels that I have found. Will they attack the low lying fish like gobies, jawfish, etc?
Thanks!

None of thos fish will like an overly rock substrate. Also, rocky substrate requires high flow, due to detritus buildup. Aggressive fish that are medium sized (in overall growth) can get overbullied by larger fish, keeping the smaller fish away from some danger. Also, add the dominant fish last.

A flame tail, along with other species would do ok as they usually hang out in the holes in the rocks. Wrasses, jawfish and gobies will not be a big fan of the rocky substrate. I don't know too many people that are happy they put damsels in their tank but alot of us did. They are aggressive, very aggressive. I have a pair in my 180 but only keep them because they were my first fish. Happy reefing.

Oh yeah firefish, cardinalfish and clowns are fairly good beginner fish.

So, I haven't started any huge progress no the tank, it would be a lot of work but should I replace the rocks with sand?

I replaced mine once I began keeping coral. Better now than when you have frags stuck all over your rocks. I changed mine because I was disappointed in how much it hindered my options in livestock, not unlike yourself.
