View Full Version : SPOT?

This morning I noticed a spot on my small tang. There is always discoloration first thing in the morning so I put it off for a minute. But as everyone got into their usual colors I noticed that this spot on the little tang is still there. I don't think it's a disease (primarily because I've issued a command to the tank that this will not happen), but it's not a burn either.

I don't have any heaters or any kind of heat specific devices in the display. The spot is smooth, no holes, no bumps, surrounded by a section of bleached white skin or scales. Sorry about the quality, it's a photo by iPhone.

It could be, but the bleaching effect looks "burnish" if you know what I mean. I could be wrong but I can't really see a divit of any kind. Now, if loud clicking heard outside the tank, it may be my pistol shrimp. From what I understand their clacking can actually generate a 'spark' of sorts. That could be the cause. The shrimp came in with a rock somewhere along the line and I've only rarely seen parts of him poking out from his hidey hole.

The thing is the little tang (I've named him "Little Tang") sleeps on the other end of the tank. It could be a pest anenome though.

Go have Milly take a close up that's not blurry.

looks like head line and lateral erosion, just not on the head, on the lateral line. Usually that is from water quality. Are there any other tangs in the tank? Could be a scalpel cut that is healing.

Along that line of thought (Head & lateral line), any stray current in the tank? Do you get a little jolt when you put your hand with a small cut in the tank? Stress contributes to H&L, which can be a small electrical current in the tank...Just a thought.. Mike (& Kristy)

HLLE I would almost bet a millyon dollars on it. LOL. You see how the other spots on the tang are becoming more apparent? That's the spots on their Lateral Line. Water quality and stray current would most likely be the problems. Good call Kristy!

I haven't felt any jolts at all... but I do have a grounding plug that I can plug in right away.

I don't think this thing is healing since today is the first day its had the ring, rather I would assume it will get worse.

Water parameters are all sweet, with the exception of the 'trates. Going to check after the water change settles (just did a 20% this morning). I haven't checked anything like calcium or akalinity though.

when I got the Little Tang it was bony or skinny with bones jutting out at the lungs and spine... or where the lungs should be anyway... but just in the last two weeks he's come around to a nice full look and his color has been showing more often than not.

I'll go plug in the grounding plug, what else should I check for to confirm the lateral line thing?

Todd, Milly's first remark this morning when we saw the mark was that the Little Tang had ring worm... but no cats... no cat fish...

Ok, now that looks terrible. Here are the differences as I see them though.

The Little Tang doesn't have, like you mentioned earlier, in the locations depicted in the gif. Even the photo that showed those other spots (not visible ordinarily, we were suprised to see them in the photo.

The other thing is, and I'm not sure what the beginings of that desease looks like, it is only a coloration issue at this point. The pictures above look as if the flesh is rotting off or peeling back. In fact the LT spot was barely visible late last night before the lights went out.

I'll post later today when the lights come on to update on whether the spot is still there... or, god forbid, whether its gotten worse.

Touche. I plugged it in immediately after posting. Perhaps that was the cause.

Anyone know where I could get a piece of coal in the shape of a camera for my kid's Xmas present?
