well i have about a 3 inch sand bed and the live rock placement is sub par IMO. so i decided to do the whole aquascapeing with drilling rock and inserting guides to keep everything solid.
i had a hard time finding rod (acrylic or glass or plastic) that i liked until i stumbled upon some knitting needles that are make from acrylic. they are two per pack and each one is 10mm in dia and 10inches long. they only cost 0.70 per pack and i got 14 packs. that is about 280 inches of 10mm acrylic that i can cut up to sections and use in my aquascape. will post pics of before and after as time allows. (i have two young kids 3 m and 2 yr, so this may take a while, i just thought i scored a cool buy)

Awesome idea. Who had 14 packs of knitting needles in stock?! I'm sure they're out of stock now for those who want to copy your idea. :)

also.. does anyone raise the base rocks off the sand bed to provide extra sand grazing area? im thinking after all this i could get a diamond goby to keep it all clean.

sorry for the lack of details. i got them in the clearance section of hobby lobby at the forum shopping center. they had about 5-10 remaining but for some reason they were 1.40 instead of 0.70???? but i am sure that there is a plastic supplies house over off of rittiman and i-35 that has all kinds of plastics and acrylics in stock and would be just about as cheap. (i forget what it is called) regal? ........plastics????

WOW!! lots of intense hard work and about 3 hrs of time.
it is done, well at lease the main framework is done. im sure that i will need to touch up some sections of the rock placement and hide some of the red acrylic that may be noticed.
i would venture to say that i tripled the functioning surface area of the live rock in the tank. i no longer have rocks piled up like bricks. i have them shooting out all over the place and its going to allow the fish plenty of places to hide and feel secure but still be visable under more situations.
i also have very very little rock touching the back glass and none touching the sides or frt glass.
will post pics as soon as the water clears. (tomorrow)

those pics provide no justice. there is so much depth to this tank there is no way for a 2d pic to show every detail.
