View Full Version : Maybe one more: ISO the perfect fish

I am thinking of maybe adding one more fish to my 125g tank but I don't want it to mess with the current fish.
I currently have:
1 pair of ocellaris clowns
1 pair of spotted mandarin
small group of PJ Cardinals
It's just so very, very tough to get a fish back out if they turn out to be unsuitable that I don't want to make a mistake.
My clown fish get freaked out if the fish is really hyper or/and carries a knife (like the Kole Tang we rehomed to Rob). So no tang.
And I don't want anything that gets too territorial and aggressive with the Mandarins. No lawnmower blennies for that reason.
I've always thought the flame hawks were very cool but how do those interact with other fish?
Royal Gramma are pretty too. Are they hyper or territorial towards other fish?
The shrimp gobies are super cool but I chose a DSB and only have sugar fine sand - no stability for tunneling.

Flame hawks can mess with inverts, especially shrimp. They can also be territorial with smaller fish.

I love royal grammas, if you like pairs-I would introduce two at once because they are only territorial to eachother or dottybacks.

Oh and I don't have a tank cover!! :(
I think that rules out firefish, hogfish/wrasses, etc.
Maybe it's just clams from now on...

Well, I have to say that a Mystery Wrasse is one of my favorite fish, both Mark and James have them in their tanks, and they are amazing animals, but you are right, supposedly they jump, although I have a Velvet Wrasse that has never jumped.
My favorite fish of all time was my Blue-Spotted Jawfish, but when I was out scuba diving with James, I came home to see he had jumped to his death.
I have 3 firefish that I got from Jason at Aquarium Designs, I had 2 from another fish store, but they didnt make it through acclimation...Firefish are known to jump, although I have an open top and they have never jumped so I dont know where they stand.
Perhaps, you can get a school, like 4 to 8, blue chromis for your tank? They are not expensive, but would have an excellent schooling look in your tank which would be very attractive with your variety of colors and large swimming area.
I also have a tail-spot blenny which has quickly risen to one of my favs of my tank...he is strikingly beautiful and doesnt mess with anyone or anything...ahhhh, that may be your ticket? I dont know how he does with mandarins, but I cant imagine him messing with anything.
Another little treasure that I have, of which many told me not to get, is I have an awesome orange linkia starfish, and he is something else. Everyone loves to see him and his travels, I am really suprised at how interesting he is, and no problems at all.
Karin, as I was leaving today, we were talking about some different things for you to try, and remember that I am a noob, but I think you should get some Duncan corals, beautiful and pleasant growers; ACANS of course, and my wife, my mother, my mother-in-law all love my wellsophyllia which all of these I have on my sand bed and they are doing great!
Just some brainstorming and thoughts from lil ol me!~

Ive found that most wrasses wont jump if theyre in the tank with no other wrasses, the one exception being the flasher wrasse. Ive had a mystery in my tank with no cover for about 7 months and hes still there, hangs out mostly in the rocks untill its time to eat. There are two variants, Hawiian and Indo, the Hawiian is supposed to be less aggressive than the Indo, the way to tell the difference is the Indo will have obvious vertical stripes along its flank.... Very cool fish...

I'd go with some type of basslet. The royal gramma is always a nice choice. Black Cap basslets are pretty cool also. Or if you want to spend more a swissguard basslet is a pretty cool fish.

Or you could get a flame cardinal. Not a real popular fish but I always liked them. They don't get along with other flame cardinals but mine never bothered PJ's or Banggai's.

If you are interested in a basslet, check out the chalk bass:

Or if you are considering the mystery wrasse, you should check out the one that Gabe has for sale. He's had it 2 or 3 weeks and it's in great condition and is one of the prettiest that I've seen.
Of course if I know you (and I don't at all) I would'nt be surprised if this whole mandarin spawning event puts the brakes on adding another fish. That's all you need is for the newbie to spoil their mood!

Wow Kristy you totally have me figured out. That's actually exactly what I was thinking :)
