Cool electric anemone sting... [Archive]

First off this is the third time I’ve written this post…!!! I’m writing it in word this time…haha!!!

So I got this SUPER NEON green BTA from Reefs2u this weekend and it’s a stinger. LOL! The entire time I was trying to place it in the tank (yes bare handed) it kept stinging me but not like any other sting I have experienced in the past.

It was sending short bolts of energy :lightbulb: into my hand and through my arm. When I let it go it would stop and then I would quickly grab it again trying to place it and the bolts would start again. I thought this was cool. No real ill affects either…just small waves of energy…not like a typical sting that resembles a bee sting or hot feeling. It was tolerable...I kind of want to go touch it again...hope I'm not morphing into a clownfish or something.!?!

That carpet is even more impressive in person! I would NOT (call me crazy) want to be stung by anything that big.

How about you LFS people...

I know Kevin (clone) breaks out from calcium...lol when he cuts chalices...last time he cut his to frag for me at the store with the little table saw and he had calcium all over his hair, face and glasses...it was so funny, I'm laughing as I type because I can still picture him. Like a big ol' kid who doesn't care. LOL! I think he gets numb or something...can't remember. It was funny!!!

Mine sting me all the time. But, I really don't notice until later when it starts to itch.

BTW, I had a really, really nasty infection on a finger last Xmas from a coral. Thought they were going to have to slice it open... Hurt like heck.

I have had many anemones over the years and corals and I have to say this is the first one that has actually packed a punch. It's a small punch but it's definitely noticeable. I consider myself to not have very sensitive skin as I have never ever had a problem in the past and I've done a lot of fragging without gloves!

Check out this link...she states it's an anemone but it's a Duncan colony...the pics of her reaction are at the bottom of the page. Ouch!

Zoas and Palys pack toxins which can be very harmful to some...if they get in your blood stream which is why they recommend wearing gloves and goggles.

They like to squirt when you frag them and if it gets in your eyes you could have some problems there.

I'm insulted Justin. I love bow fronts, but this is not a bow front, it's a half circle!!! I'll try and get a pic soon, the darn thing moved the first night and went into a ledge and has been slowing coming out...in a few days he should be fully out and visible.

I had a torch coral that would sting the crap out of me. After I brushed it once or twice it would start stinging, painful enough that I would avoid it.

Never from my RBTAs, but back in the LFS days I wouldnt go near big carpets after I had been ZAPPED a few (hundred) times :D

LOL at this thread. The closest thing I have had was a lta that wouldn't let go of my arm. I sold it and when I finally got it free it grabbed on tight. I don't think it wanted to leave. Other than that haven't had a sting but then again poison ivy doesn't do anything to me either. Bull metal on the other hand...
