View Full Version : How To Remove Crushed Coral From Substrate?

So, when I setup my 90 gallon tank, I had some jawfish. In order to make a good environment for them I put in some crushed coral that could be used to build burrows. Well, the jawfish died and I have no intention of getting replacements, now I am stuck with some crushed coral in my substrate.
I have been "combing" it out little by little. Combing would be a very accurate description of what I am doing considering that I am using a hair pick to sift out the crushed coral.
Should I even bother? Should I just get more sand and cover it up?
Here is a semi blurry picture of what I have:

It does not see to be hurting anything or causing any problems. My nassarius snails just glide right over it.

Crushed coral isnt the ideal substrate for Nassatious snails. You could remove it a little at a time by simply siphoning it out.. I say you should just get some new jawfish! How deep is the bed?

The substrate is mostly sand, but I had put some crushed coral on top for the jawfish. The sand bed is only an inch or so deep. It was too shallow for the pearly jawfish that I had so they died.
I have been removing it little by little by just pulling out a cup or two of it every so often. I will probably do it again this week before I do my water change.

Always go slow, only bad things happen quickly! Who's quote is that? I think Dustins?

I once replaced all my crushed coral with sand. The litter scoop really works, I would stay away from the wired kind at first unless you have that finer crushed coral...the plastic kind should get most of it out though. I keep one always in my unofficial tool box, its helpful for finding lost things in the sand :p
