View Full Version : Gorgeous Kole Tang to Great Home Only

This gorgeous Kole tang is my new addition to my tank. She's very pretty, eats lots of different food but she's just a little too busy for my tank.
My elderly pair of Ocellaris Clowns are a little rattled by her activity level and she eats the mysis shrimp I try to target feed my sun corals.
We are just used to having a pretty passive tank.
I've had these clown fish for several years and I just want them to be able to enjoy their retirement. ;)
She would make a great center peace in a 75 gallon tank or larger with no other tangs or aggressive fish.
Since Kole tangs only grow to about 5.5 inches she is one of the smallest and least aggressive tangs.
Kole tangs are bristle tooth tangs which means she likes to clean rocks and glass all day but she also loves frozen food.
Available to good new home only.
Asking $50 but also interested in trades.
Looking for:
Blastomussa, Echinophyllia (Chalise), Cladiella (Colt), Plerogyla (Bubble Coral), Zoas, Heliopora (Blue Ridge), Turbinara (Cup Coral) and of course more sun coral or chili corals

Beautiful fish! I also appreciate how much you care about your fish and where they go. It's great to see. Hope it finds a good home soon!

I have a Kole tang, I love her kiss marks all over the glass. Mine holds her own against all my other tangs. She would be a beautiful addition to any tank I think.

Yes I actually have no experience with tangs and wouldn't be able how well she got along with others. What I read about them is this:
'The Kole Tang is one of the shyest tangs and will need rock work to hide in and no other tangs to bully it' (She does like her rock caves but here her only tank mates are my mandarins, my cardinals and my clowns so she's not afraid of those of course.
And since I target feed everything in my tank she also chases after the Kent Sea Squirt tool - not afraid of that either.
Here's a link to some Kole info:

'Kole Compatibility,
Some folks have reported that their Kole was disagreeable with other fish livestock; but it's been my experience that the vast majority of this and all other Ctenochaetus Tangs get along with most all tankmates... with the exception of other fishes that occupy their "niche"... that is, mainly other Ctenochaetus and similarly shaped fishes (Zebrasomas mostly) and some Rabbitfishes... that look like and feed on similar types of algae (filamentous attached). There can be some "sparring" to be expected if these sorts of fishes are placed too close together, in cramped quarters.... Similar fishes, particularly other Acanthuroids, like the Siganids (Rabbitfishes) require a good fifty gallons per specimen to keep together.
The same applies to trying to keep more than one Kole in a system. They need a minimum of fifty gallons of space per specimen. Even with this roominess, some sword- or tang-play is to be expected... and it's advised to do the usual moving of a good deal of the rock ahead of any newcomer addition, and to keep the lights off for that day to reduce territorial aggression. LOL. See I just upgraded from a 29g (had it for nearly a decade - the clowns old home) to a 125g last spring and thought that was huge. ;)
Looks like you had a 29 as well!
So yes, if you have a ginormous tank then more than this one tang may work out :)

I had a kole tang with my purple, blue hippo and sailfin. That would also hold her own but we lost her in a power outage last week, which also took out my coral beauty. It was a sad day and a long story. Anyways these are nice fish and I'm sure she will find a good home.

EuroMom, I'm looking for a couple more tangs.
I can trade frags for the Kole. PM me if interested. She would be going in the tank in my sig. I have a Purple Tang and a Yellow Tang. Both are no bigger than 3".

Thanks Sherry :) (I still need to see what kind of frags you got - have nothing to trade for yet other than money but you can trade that for whatever you want ;) )
Rob, what an awesome tank design. How is the paint going to hold up to a bristlemouth tang's daily brushing? Do you know?

Thanks for the compliment. I do not have any paint inside of my tank. I do have black pond foam though as the base for this tank. The rest is live rock. I do not see any problems and I've been using this product for over 3 years in various reefs. The first time I used resin and that turned out to be a mess and the resin would break away as crabs and fish fed off of the artifitial rock. I have not used resin since the first time thoguh.

Ok, just let me know when. I'm in no hurry but definitely want her.
If she is hand fed you could hold some seaweed in the tank and have a large net below her waiting to scoop her up. Or try two nets and just keep wearing her down.

I think she prefers bloodworms and mysis over seaweed so I've been trying to lure her with the sea squirt. By now she must be feeling really full though...
This is tough!
My whole tank is set up with the dragonets in mind. I have massive amounts of very porous liverock and dozens of caves and throughways.
I even went and got a black net instead of a bright blue one (she does seem to be less suspicious of the black one). I also did a search for 'mini harpoons' on ebay -j/k. ;)
It will be weird if I really have to take out 160 pounds of rock to get her but I just had another clown jump into the overflow so I am motivated...
I am thinking this will be my last tang -they're just too fast for me. I much prefer the gullable clowns and laid back mandarins...

I was just contemplating if Poly Filters would filter out cyanide when my 3 year old peekaboo-ed the tang into the net!
I am going to keep her in my QT tank until you are ready to meet up.
My QT tank is only 10gallons though with a little hang on filter. I added an air stone. I hope that will keep her well until the transfer.
It's always worked fine for other fish but I just read tangs need highly oxygenated, high flow water.
If there is anything else I can do to keep your fish safe let me know.
