Ok, ok, I know we have tons of bonified aquarium veterans and freaks on here, but I want to share a tip that I recently learned from Dr. Mark at GC Reef which has really taken my Acans to another level...veterans, if you already know or do this, be nice, to all the newbies trying to get something to grow, read the details....
One of my crowned jewels in my tank are my two ACAN frags that I received from GC Reef, one is scarlet red with grey stripes, and the other one is a bright cherry red with greenish, blue rings in the head which is my favorite due to the really bright colors.
I placed these two acans on my sand bed under my 150watt halide with T5 atinics and was hoping to see some growth. Well, Dr. Mark gave me a golden jewel of advice since acans are one of his prized corals and I figured I would share with the newbs because it is so awesome to have some success early on in this hobby.
For the size of my tank and acan frags, I took an 18oz coke bottle, cut out the bottom (the big end), tore off the labels, and cleaned it really good to make a feeding device.
About every 3 days, I mix up some mysis shrimp, arctipods, phyto feast and oyster feast in a cup, and then I place the coke bottle over softies such as my acans, duncans, palys, rose bubble tip anemone, etc...and I inject this food recipe into the coke bottle which targets the food to the coral. The coke bottle keeps fish from stealing the food and it keeps the food from blowing around in the current. I have been doing this for about 3 weeks and I am seeing excellent results.
Give it a try and let me know if you have any questions!
Good Luck,
Michael Hensley
