I've always kept my heater in the sump to keep it away from the fish. Not sure if this is an option for you. My daughter has a bio and she keeps hers in the overflow area.

When I see a working hot tub in a back yard, I tear off my clothes and jump in - is that the same thing?

Is there a light on the heater that they might be attracted to?

You know Ive never used a heater in a tank smaller than 50g here in San Antonio. My current tank does not have one and will not get one. We live in a warm climate and I have found my water only fluctuates a degree or 2 when we have what we call cold weather- which is rare. What size aquarium are you running? Everytihng in the tank powerheads, return pumps, lights all produce heat.
