about to add the sand and more LR tomorrow hopefully
Any ideas on what kind of tank mates i should go with once it cycles?

I would get a couple of damsels crabs and snails before I would put anything in there. That way you can monitor it to see how they do. But nice tank look forward to seeing more.

Strongly disagree, here on maast we try to stay away from any fish/damsel cycling method. Let the tank mature on its own with the live rock. Seed the tank with somone elseses sand or LR rubble and in a few weeks you will be ready to go.
You have had other aquariums so im sure you are fimiliar with that process, just wanted to chime in because of the above quote.

I was not saying for cycling I was stating for starter fish. Its up to you. I understand why you don't want to cycle with damsels because it put unneeded stress on the fish.

Sorry for the misunderstanding on that. I still would not add damsels though because then you have to catch them to get them out when you decide you do not want them.
a list of what you can do in a nano includes
Clowns
dwarf angels
basslets
gobies
cardinals
firefish
jawfish
etc.......

Yeah I agree with you Ray, I am little wet behind the ears on this as well and maybe should not post advise. I am going to have the issue in catching them also.

I really like the jawfish. They are really interesting. You need to watch the dwarf angels because they pick at corals. Especially the lemon peel. The coral beauty is hit or miss. Some pick and some don't. Sand sifters are always interesting. Purple firefish are absolutely stunning. Just my 2 cents.

not sure if the gramma will get along with the firefish

According to the compatibility chart, gobies and basslets are compatible.

Royal grammas can have a bit of a attitude for such a small fish, but as long as you provide hiding spots I think you would be ok.

booo on the jawfish. I had one distroy my aquascaping, and then to get him out...:at_wits_end: My coral beauty ate my zoas. My neighbors flame angel ate his corals. Dwarf angels are risky. One of my personal favorite is the citron goby. I like the chalk bass too. I really liked my bluespot jawfish. I just couldn't take him messing everything else up.
In my 29g bio cube I have a pajama cardinal, a mandrin goby, and two tomato clowns. I also have a fire shrimp, a peppermint shrimp, an emerald crab, and lots of snails and hermits. They are all one big happry family.
Here is my vote Andrew..

get a couple of harlequin skrimps. i had one for a while and they are boundlessly amusing, a chalk basslet, a pearly jawfish, and maybe a pair of clowns, if'n you like them, and maybe a rbta. or if you were devoted to the reef and didn't want to get any more than one fish, then i'd get an awesome frogfish (was trying to find a good picture, google antennarius maculatus)

Dwarf angels are a hit or miss for sure. Ive had several none have ever touched my corals. I did have one that had a taste for clams though.

Standard hood? What temp do you keep your house? Our house is at 76 to 78 and I have a standard hood. I have never had problems. I wonder if an old pump would create more heat than a newer one? Like if it wasn't running efficiently.

I agree... but, the fact that he is having to do that makes me wonder what is going on. I have never heard of that problem on a stock biocube.

It will recycle of you used new water to fill it up. If you reused the water you already had in it you shouldnt have a problem. In reality the tank has only been setup a week without live stock so you have nothing to worry about.
My Biocube 29 has now been setup for 15 days, nine of those days with semi cured liverock so I will be ready for live stock soon. My parameters are looking good.

Clown gobys are known for being shy. My previous BioCube I had a yellow clown goby that was the exact opposite though. People we amazed that he sat out in the open. His favorite spot was being perched on my big shrooms.
Maybe if you introduce some good size shrooms to it, it will come out a bit more. The love sitting on coral.

I love clown gobys! I heard that they can kill sps because the love to sit on them. Briguy has a little green clown goby(sharkbait). He loves to sit at the base of one of his sps and that is the only one in his tank that is struggling.

i have a warpaint clown and he was shy at first just darted out to eat, now he sits all day in my toadstool right in the front of the tank and the coral doesnt mind. he just hides in it.

if you remeber I had a 4x24w t5 on it, worked very good especial since it's shallow, but I gotta admit the shimmer and growth from a MH is great, also no heat issues from the t5
