so far i have lost

yellow wrasse
4 chromis
3 fire fish
yellow spotted mandarin

any one have an idea of why they may be jumping ?? I'm tired of losing fish this way

Fish scare other fish......so the fish jump. That's typically what I've seen.

I don't have a top on my tank either. I fashioned a barrier out of florescent light covers to keep fish from jumping out. Other than that it is completely open.

Not keeping a top on the tank has helped a lot with heat dissipation. One of the cons is that I have to top off the tank every other day.

Here's a crappy image of my tank, but as you can see the "guard" that I made for the top of the tank does not attenuate the light:

I have glass tops for my 75. It keeps my wrasses in, and I'm fortunate enough to not have heat issues. I do have a 30 gallon sump that is open, so alot of heat dissipates from this. And with the glass, I still get to keep the benefits of the halides. But I understand that many people can't do this, due to heat issues.

The hardware stores have 'chrome' eggcrate. The reflectiveness of the chrome might help the lighting as well as keep the fish in.
Besides that, everything looks better with chrome!

I am NOT going topless. I have the canopy on as well as the class top, reason why is my return kicks a lot of water and keeps my spray inside the tank, and not on the fixture. however i do have to pull and clean the top which is a down fall. i don't have heat problems since my sump is open and i have fans in my canopy displacing the heat.

Yeah they are. They love it. They divide like crazy. I have had them for about a year. The frag originally had five or so heads on it, then they spread.

Mine too. I love the little gold line that they have that outlines their fins.

My tank is also topless I wanted to do something similar to the crate but instead find someone who could make me out of acrylic with a square whole in the middle because i am in my tank all the time.

I have been topless on both my tanks with no worries of jumpers. Worst jumper I have is my jawfish, but he's settled in to his burrow so no more worries.

Just a word to all you Topless folks with CHILDREN. A Halide arc is just as bad (if not worse) than a welding arc.....kids will just stare into these things if given the opportunity and could do some serious dammage to thier little eyes....thats the only reason I have a canopy...or "tank heater" Ha.

I'm open, sort of. My TX5 fixture covers an 8" wide swath. Never lost a fish to jumping thankfully.

Here are some DIY screen cover links:

Won't stop kids from looking though.
