I want to upgrade my Coralife 65 skimmer for a better skimmer. A HOB skimmer works well in my sump cabinet, or I could also fit a stand alone skimmer. I don't really have the sump space now for a in-sump skimmer.

This will be a SPS dominated tank, so i'd rather this purchase be a skimmer I can keep for the long haul. I like the precision marine skimmers (bullet series) but i'm not sure that wouldn't be overkill on my system (wasted capacity).

Any other reccomendations?

take a look at the marineland series the smallest if for a 100g not a big deal but they are needlewheel style and the pump is under the container so it minimizes the foot print. its not a hob but doesn't take up much space. i am using the corallife and seems to be fine for me.

I'm just worried something may be wrong with the thing. I can go a full week and the cup will still be only half full. It's directly in the output of my overflow, so I know it's getting raw water. The pump is opened full bore and I have tried having the bubbles anywhere from right under the cup, to about an inch above the bottom of the cup.

Since you're wanting to have an SPS dominant tank, I would go with the biggest skimmer that will fit and that your budget allows.

You can't go wrong with a Reef Octopus, great "bang for your buck". I've been using a RO nw150 on my 40g (SPS dominant) for close to a year and LOVE IT!!! I bought it used (3 weeks old) for less than $100.
