View Full Version : Male Spotted Mandarin Dragonet -eats FROZEN food

I purchased what I thought to be a male/female pair of mandarin dragonets (spotteds) but it turns out I got two males.
I've spent a few weeks training them to accept frozen food and that is going well.
Since they are both males they do not get along with each other though.
Available is one male Synchiropus picturatus (Spotted/Target/Psychedelic Dragonet). He readily eats selco enriched blood worms, some frozen mysis, decapsulated brine eggs, frozen fish eggs, etc. and has been gaining weight well on this diet.
I'd be happy to demonstrate him eating frozen food to a local buyer.
Asking $20 for the dragonet or would love to trade for a female spotted dragonet (even if she doesn't eat frozen food).
I'd really like this one to go to a home that offers at least a 30 gallon tank without any stinging anemones and an aquarist that's dedicated to keeping this little fish fed (turn off high flow pumps for a few minutes to allow it to eat, etc.)

I should have been more specific of what local is to me. Sorry about that!
We're in La Vernia, TX a few miles SE of San Antonio.
If you want to see it eat then you'd pretty much have to come and pick it up.
If somebody wanted to meet in San Antonio I could do that too (like City Base on IH 37 and 410) but I doubt the fish will feel like eating in a plastic bag.
I can't deliver it much further than that.
I have a baby and a toddler and they both are not big fans of being in their car seats so I don't want to deliver the fish any further than San Antonio.

I am adding a picture of the little guy so people can see what he/what a Synchiropus picturatus (Spotted/Target/Psychedelic Dragonet) looks like.
He is a SPOTTED mandarin - not the more common green mandarin.

You really need to update your profile to reflect your location, Texas is a big state...

Thanks Jim! That crummy picture really doesn't do him justice. I have another male slightly bigger in my main display tank and he's just gorgeous. The turquoise really pops when you see the full grown ones in person.
I would have been open to rehome either one of them but there's no way I get the bigger one out of my 130 gallon live rock filled display tank.
The littler one is in my little tank so that's why he's the one available. He has a little bit of growing to do but should be very pretty.
And he's nice and round - not the emaciated kind you usually see. :)

I named him Chris (as in Chris and Pat from Saturday Night Live) because I just couldn't be sure if he's male of female. By the reaction of my big male I'd say definitely male though.http://www.mellowyellowsoap.com/chris.jpg
corkyGramma, I am surprised too! When I was looking for Mandarins I would have been so excited to find one that already ate frozen. I spent about 100 bucks on live mysids to get these guys going.
I've been wanting one for about 10 years. I set up my whole system with Mandarins in mind. I just love them.
I specifically chose the spotteds over the more common greens because Matt Wittenrich the guy that successfully bred both (super rare) says their social structure is more appealing with them laying on the rocks together, etc.
Hence my search for a female to get that pairing/social structure.
I think most people don't know how valuable the frozen food thing is and don't realize that one that doesn't eat frozen will plow through the pod population of a small tank in no time, slowly starving over weeks or months.
I keep telling my husband that the fact that so many people inquire about Chris but nobody actually comes to get him is a way of fate telling us we need to start a seahorse tank and keep Chris with the seahorses. But my husband says fate already told us to get a 130 gallon last spring when my toddler put a can of fish food into my 30 gallon tank and he's tired of fate telling us to get more fish tanks. LOL

sorry I just now saw your message above. Yes you'de be next in line. :)
I'd like to see him go to a home without stinging anemones, no other male mandarins, at least 30 gallons and somebody willing to feed him daily which means turning off the pumps for a bit, enriching his bloodworms with Selco, etc.
Whoever gets the fish also gets a sample of the stuff he eats along with a little bit of Super Selco to ge him off to a good start. All included in the fabulous bargain price of $20. LOL
If you can provide that email me if interested karin@lavernia.net
If that doesn't work out I'll check with corkyGramma next, then David, etc.

Oh yes! I don't think they forget live foods. The ability to survive on frozen just ensures survival if live foods become scarce.
I'll email you. :)

I haven't heard back yet from the previous person with a plan to transfer the fish.
I usually wouldn't do this but I've already held the fish TWICE for somebody for several days and Chris is really starting to get a little upset about being in the breeder net (starting to pace and trying to jump out of it) so in Chris' best interest if I don't hear from the other person this evening I'd like to see about how to transfer the fish, corkyGramma.
If it ends up being yours do you want me to bring him into San Antonio or do you want to pick him up here in LaVernia?
(you can watch him eat if you pick him up - probably not so much if I stick him in a plastic bag and take him to San Antonio)

Sure I can pick him up there in la vernia. I dont remember how far la vernia is from 410s. The highway crosses 1604 doesn't it? Its been a few years since I picked up my dobie pup from a breeder over there.

Corky, I hope Chris will work out great for you! PM me if you have any questions.
Pat my other male is spoken for as well and will go to R Allard as soon as he's heavy enough.
And I finally found a FEMALE!

Back on the market:
my second male spotted mandarin dragonet 'Pat'.
He is nice and round by now and loves his frozen food.
Let's make this a little simpler this time:
If you are REALLY interested in this fish
and are willing to continue feeding it as outlined before
and have a tank of 30 gallons or more
and don't have anything in your tank that would injure or eat the dragonet
and are able to meet me in San Antonio to receive the fish or can come to pick it up here
and you can do so within a few days of contacting me
then please PM or email me
Thanks!
:)
