I want to put at least 4 tangs in my 115 five footer.....any suggestions....I think I may have to get rid of my yellow tang first,...he keeps killing everything....even non-tangs....I really like the Achilles, Powder Blue/Brown, Yellow Eye Kole, Maybe a Clown Tang to show that Yellow what's Up?? Anyone have some first hand experience or tips??

I've always heard you can mix tangs as long as you put them in the tank at the same time. It's after they are established that they won't allow other tangs in.

Make sure you add the most aggressive one last. If you don't add them all at the same time. Orginally I only had a Powder Blue and a Mimic tang. They fought a little but then it subsided. Just recently I added a Blonde Naso and the Powder Blue wouldn't leave him alone. I thought he was going to kill him becuase he ripped his tail fin. Thankly after some preventive measures they are all doing well now.

Which would you say is the most aggressive?
I had a unicorn-like tang (similar to the Vlamingi) that is the largest and a yellow tang. My yellow has tolerated all tangs except for a purple tang. He wasn't the friendliest with a yellow mimic tang either, but wasn't beating it up. It's been a while since I tried adding more so last weekend I used my store credit at RCA andI added a hippo and a powder blue. I have to say that the power blue is BEAUTIFUL!!!
Nobody is fighting in my tank...have a few tail flutters going on, but that's it. You will really like the powder blue in my opinion. I would love to add a blond naso, but I don't know if that would be pushing it.

This is a good conversation...I've been wondering the same thing on my 150 gallon (6ft.X18"X29") I'm starting. My idea was after my clowns have been in there for a few weeks/month (after tank has cycled of course) add the tangs all at once.
Was thinking -
1 Powder Blue
1 Hippo
1 Clown (tang)
2 yellow - maybe
Is this crazy? Do you think ammonia/nitrates will go out of control. I'm skeptical of adding this many fish at once, but I want these tangs and feel its the only way to avoid serious territory issues.

We had over 5 tangs in a 125gal that was 6' long. We added a Sohal tang as the last fish.
I would add the Powder Blue, Hippo and Yellow at the same time. Wait a couple of weeks and then add the Clown, I hear they are as aggressive as a Sohal, JMHO.

Thats a good suggestion, I was thinking if the Clown was a little smaller, which it seems they usually are, and the biggest being the Hippo, which seem to stress the most - I might be alright. I'm just concerned about water quality, but with a big tank I might be ok. Also I dont want to do a water change for at least a month till their settled in.

i have 7 tangs (2 yellow tangs, scopas, blue hippo, naso, powder brown, purple tang) in my 210gal (72 x 24 x29).... they all are getting along, yeah i do see a few fights here in there but that is normal... i initially started off with 2 yellow tangs and a scopas tang, they were in the 75gal tank together for about 1 1/2 yrs, then i added the Blue hippo and the Naso tang, then upgraded to 210gal, and i then added the purple tang, about 1 month later added the powder brown tang.....
they all seem to do well, but i have noticed that they tend to be a little shy when i feed them so i kind of have to feed the pigs first, and then on the side feed the newbie tang, then they get the hang of it and they start rolling with the big dogs.....
my future tangs in the list that are now pending is maybe 2-3 more tangs, cause i really don't know how many i should keep in there to be in a safe side.... thinking on the Powder Blue/Clown and for sure last to be added the SOHAL TANG (just can't wait to get this beautiful tang)

I really like Kole Tangs. They have a good personality. I haven't been able to keep tangs though. They just don't seem to dig my setup and die.

I keep 2 yellow tangs, a naso, and blue hippo in the same 125 gallon tank. I also had a gold-rim but he got ich and died. I added them all on the same day. They never fought other than the initial squabble over the best hang outs.
Generalizations about tangs:
1 Adding them at the same times helps with agression.
2 Mix tangs with different body shapes for best success, i.e: yellow, naso and powder blue, not yellow, purple, and scopas. There is less friction from different shaped tangs. Different genus's are less likely to fight too.
3 Add the most agressive tangs last. I believe clowns and sohals are the most agressive; powder blue, achilles, powder brown (and others from this genus) are next; then yellow, purple, and scopas are next, and nasos and hippos seem to be the least territorial.
Note: every tang is as unique as every person, while these observations are generally true, there are always individuals who didn't read my post and therefore, don't conform.

I've also been told that it helps if you make sure that your least aggressive tang is also the biggest. That's what a tang guy at Aquatek told me with regards to adding an Achilles and maybe a powder blue to my tank, where I already have a Naso and a blue hippo. He said as long as the Naso is the biggest and the meanest guy is the smallest, I shouldn't have too much trouble with them.
