View Full Version : Relationships Kill Fish!!!

Hello everyone. My name is Boone. Some of you out there might know me from Eric and Sherry at one of the only shops in corpus where I help out sometimes. The reason this thread has this title is because as we all know relationships are hard and people break up. About a week ago my girlfriend decided that she didnt want to be a part of my life anymore and went back home to chicago. And Im ok with that. Trust me, I will be alright.
On the way out she decided that it was absolutely necessary to dump a cup of clorox bleach into my reef tank, A 72 gallon bowfront that has been set up for almost a year, killing everything. I came home from work at seven in the evening to find a cloudy tank and my favorite clown fish floating upside down, and a bid mess of goo.
This is a list of things that were killed:
1)ORA Duncan Polyp with at least 10 heads
2)Idaho grape montipora
3)ORA orange cap Monti
4) a generic ling si (green cap with purple rim)
5)Several small colonies of premium grade acans
6)Three baseball sized colonies of SPS
7) A beautiful colony of molten lobo brains
8)3 decent size colonies of zoanthids
9) 2 Rose Bubble tip anemones one large one small
10) 2 disbar anthias
11) A Pearly Jawfish
12) The only green chromis ive managed to keep alive for more than three days.
13) And the worst of all, My pair of ORA A- Grade picasso clowns that just recently hosted The RBTA. They were Amazing, and will be missed.
I wanted to post this to thank anyone and everyone that has helped me out along the way. Ive spent almost every dime Ive made on this Hobby for the past two years, because its been a life long fascination! What Im asking for is a morale boost and some encouragement as I cannot afford to replace the things that I lost, but will carry on and participate more actively with the members and the friends that Ive Made along the Way. I couldnt ask for more. The generosity of the people in this community amazes me and i want to be a part of that. So this is my first ever post. Hope it is understood. Thanks again.

hey boone, so sorry to hear about this. when eric explained to me what happened a couple days ago, i swear i felt sick to my stomach. i don't think there is much anyone can say that will really make you feel better at this point...but i will say that everyone here at maast can understand your situation and we do have a great group of members who, while they may not always agree on things, will always come together to help other members through tough times. you already know that you can count on me to help you out when you decide to rebuild.
and sorry about you and a.

Sorry to hear about your trouble,, but the bigger story! if it were me? I would be calling the cops to fill out a report and have her arrested,, why are you letting her get away with that?

if you really really wanted to get back at her like tex said file a police report an file animal cruelty chargers on her fish are animals too

I agree...the animal cruelty charge would be the best route. She will be held accountable and they don't play with this stuff anymore. I would do it for the fish.

These stories are so sad. There was another one just like it a while back. I know you and have met the ex-gf. I am sorry. How these people can do that is beyond me, they are just trying to hurt you in the worst way they know. The devotion, time, energy, money that are in our tanks they know too well.
Makes it a hell of a lot easier to get over her though, I bet.
Sorry again. I will help you out when you are up and running.

Awww...Boone...I am so sorry...I would be doing the same thing - file a report. That's about the lowest on my list. Like the others said above...they don't play around with this sort of thing anymore.
If there is anything I can help with...lmk...I'm sure I can come up with something from my tank also to help you rebuild. I had my tank of 6 yrs crash this past Spring...and I lost my babies of 6 yrs...it really messed me up...I can't imagine the rage you feel - that's pretty cold. Good luck & keep us updated how things are getting back on track, k?

Wow... I didnt expect so many replies. Thank you all so much. As it stands now I have filed a police report and asked to press charges. The officer then explained to me that because I didnt catch her in the act, I wouldnt be able to do anything about it, so i think i just have to let this one go. Over the last week I have drained and refilled the tank about six times strained all of the sand and rinsed the rock. I was finally able to get water into it on Friday and over de-chlorinated it to be sure that everyhting is good. So were back in business. Pretty good for only a weeks time. I will keep you guys posted on the progress.

well i'm sure alot of us here get ****ed off to hear something like this happening. i agree and was a good thing about the police report, also some people have claimed their loses in their home insurance (that is what i have read here in maast)..... man if my fiancee were to ever do that to me... boy would i be F****** ****ed off :bareteeth::angry:, some things you just don't mess with especially when people like us spend so much time, money and effort in a really nice hobby like reefkeeping.... sorry to hear about this..... i will be glad to help out a fellow maastard.... just let us know...

Well Its the single life for me Ladies and Gents. Figure its about time to take some time for myself after three and a half years. I owe it to myself... and the deceased.

One thing... if you can get her to admit what she did in an email, you can take her to small claims court and sue for damages. It really doesn't cost much, and if you have documented everything with pictures along with an admission of guilt, you'd have a pretty open and shut case.

I know it sounds kinda sneaky, which isnt good at times, but I would really send her a heart felt message about a lot of other stuff that happend and tell her your sorry and bla bla bla... slightly mention something about the reef tank and tell her that she was worth it or something, then hopefully in her reply she will indeed mention something incriminating. Just my two cents. good luck and sorry I dont have anything that I can frag for you!

I've read this thread several times and I really can't believe someone who was with you for so long could have done that to something that's sooo time consuming and that took so much effort and love to create. I really hope you're ok, I hope this doesn't stop you from having another successful tank. I hope she doesn't go unpunished though... sorry, her actions really are unbelievable.:bareteeth:
Best of luck, and if you need anything let us know, once I have something worthy to frag i'll definitely keep you in mind.

Hi Everyone! Im back! So far my tank has been running for about 3 months. Parameters are perfect. Coraline is growing at an alarming rate! Faster than in any of my other reef tanks, so I must be doing something right! So far I have a small blue tang, a cleaner shrimp, a tail spot blenny, and a few peices of test coral that i bought juuuust to be sure. It was hard to clean up the mess and start back up, but I had to get back on my feet. Not only because I love the hobby so much, but because I wanna show myself that Im ok by all this, and that she cant keep me down!

Wow, well glad to see you didn't get discouraged.
My boyfriend and I went to Gabe's one day and we ran into a guy... forgot his name... and told us about the horrible thing that had happened.
Glad to see things are beginning to get back on track.
Slowly but surely.

Looks good. I'll hook you up with some frags if you take a trip to San Antonio. Send me a PM.
SO GLAD you got the tank up and running again. What a horrible experience, I can not imagine that happening and would be glad to help you out with a couple of frags. Way to go though!
