so i get home from work at 7am, get ready for a morning jog and when i get back i decided to turn on the lights of the Aquarium and i find my self with something very interresting, one of my damsels that i have had for about 2yrs already is looking weird, only to realized after focusing on the fish that half of his body has be cut off or something. to the point to where the spine bone is still there and sticking out, what's left from the fish the edges are very smooth..... almost as if it was a straight fine slice of the fish and not mangled up.... i really don't know what could of had caused it, the fish is still alive, no guts are sticking out, i don't have any eels, on small damsels, small tangs, and well basically all the fish are his size and nothing predator like that could be way to big to cause such a big bit. as all the fish are all pretty much the same size.... the only thing that i can think of is the clam but even then it would of had been the rear part missing...... this is a picture of my fish..

Holy cow! That is crazy! The only thing I can think of is if all the other fish started picking on this one for some reason.

Do you have a powerhead? Maybe some inverts like a coral banded shrimp?

Powerhead is a good idea. If it got sucked in there it definatley could have caused that. Good idea dmweise!

i thought about the powerhead but, if the fish got sucked in it would of had probably been head first, or if it was rear first then it would be mangled up and in this case, it seems like a very fine cut.

that about that two. about 2 nights ago i completely turned off all the lights and the moonlights, and boy did i see a lot of bristle worms, and other type of worms about 2-3 different kind of worms. some pretty big considering that the tank has only been cycling for 2 months already.

i mainly work at night so not around to listen to any clicking noises, but when i am off i don't recall hearing any.... but if so what would those "clicking" noises be?

it wasn't eating anymore

no, really don't think so because, fish will start eating from random spots and this one looks like a sliced or big bite, which i absolutely have no fish big enough to cause that.

My thoughts also....a mantis shrimp (hijacker) could, huh? Have you recently put any new rock in your tank...maybe a predator caught a ride into your tank?

i haven't put any new rocks in the tank...its the same rock that was used since the start of the tank but i did buy 80 lbs off a fellow maastard, and the other 80 lbs i already had...

Time to put the fish out of it's misery. He will suffocate without being able to swim properly.

Put him in the freezer.

Another idea would be the cause of death and bodily appearance aren't related. The bones being perfectly intact suggest some type of crab was picking him clean after his untimely death. Regardless, it's definitely worthy of winning a POTM!

now that is what i think could have been the only explanation to what happend. a crab cought him and started to pick on him. the only problem is that i do have plenty of crabs and one of a decent quarter size but the size of the crabs would probably still be too small for being able to get a hold of the fish (the fish was too big for the crab). but this could have been the only explanation, but who knows?:Timeout:

yeah keep it on there, cause although i really don't know what happen to the fish:confused:, the only logical explanation is that it somehow reversed into the powerhead (koralia 4), and caused him his body then death..

eventhough it was just a damsel, that fish had been with me for 2 yrs +, and it was very colorful, but may he R.I.P.

You could have a crab or a mantis shrimp and don't know it. Its happened to me before, in my forty gallon I had a gorilla crab and no fish went to sleep near his rock, and all the new fish I put in died because of him. In a new tank I bought live rock and I received a free mantis shrimp in my rock, woke up one day to see four fish dead and to see a mantis shrimp running around. Hope you find out what did it.

This guy cost me a bunch of money. I had only seen him once two years before and he was very small and I never saw him again. After my Purple Tang and Blue spot jawfish disappeared I tore my tank apart, found him and took him out. When you have a 200+ tank with 200 pounds of live rock, you would be surprised what your tank can hold without your knowledge.

I think a tang could do something like that....I had a tang slice a Midas Blenny almost in half....just like a Ginsu or something....very scary!!
