I wish there was somewhere I could go to learn more about marine biology without going back to college. Reefkeeping in particular. Does anyone know about anyone who teaches reefkeeping similar to a cooking class or a karate class that is very experienced? Just wondering, I live in such a small town but I really would consider driving several hours to make it to classes once a week or so. Thanks!

Not sure of a class but I learned what I do know about reefing through this site and others like it AND by visiting other reef tanks. That seems to have been enough, so far...

x2...what Stoneroller said!
Nothing has compared to the knowledge I have gained from MAAST.org and it's members!!!
But, here's something you can do in your own time...this was the first thing I ever did and it was fun...they send you emails daily for one week...it's a free email course. Very useful information but possibly some conflicting ideas. None the-less it's good info for reef keeping.

This would actually make a good topic for a meeting... A presentation on basic saltwater husbandry followed by an in depth Q & A session... It would be great if we could get some of the old timers to commit to attend...

Just be sure to read the fine print on any husbandry classes. Mrs. Recoil signed me up for one and I was all excited about learning saltwater stuff. Turns out, it was a how to be a good husband class. :Timeout:
I left the class early, went fishing for 2 days and then came home to watch TV. Jeesh, i'm already the ideal husband!!!

Hanging around an aquarium store can expose you to all kinds of knowledge. Participating in MAAST posts as well.

I absorb all I can at a fish store but I take it all lightly. All this sounds great, the main reason I wanted classes is so that I can get my girlfriend interested in the hobby and get her to learn more about my tank and share my happiness. I wish I didnt live so far from austin/san marcos/san antonio, but I would love to make a meeting. My cousin used to serve on the board committe and went to sea world once with yall, he said its the best place to learn too. I would love to find some other reefers and start a small reef guild, so that we can keep some community frag tank incase of tank crashes and to trade frags, mabe getting others into the hobby without dropping as much cash. There just isnt very much when it comes to big saltwater enthusiasts around here. Anyway thank you all for your replies, I enjoyed reading them!

It would be nice if people knew where you are besides 'Texas' you really need to update you profile to reflect a more specific location.. In fact, its pretty much a MAAST requirement.

We frequent Brownwood a lot, Steve's mother lives actually in May, one of favorites places to eat there, used to be Underwoods......I think we ate their so much, I finally got tired of it. I love to shop @ Sligers? also, great nostalgic produce store, nice plants and I love how the windmills line the highway......
