i had no idea where to post for large tanks, i have always posted in the nano section... :)
i know during the last few months i have made a bad image for myself of going through tanks so fast. i had no patience, still i do not know how much patience i have, but im learning to deal with it slowly. sorry if it has offended anyone or bothered anyone. anywayyy, here is a new start for me, i figure if i went witht he biggest tank i can afford, it would be more difficult to get rid of then a nano :) i purchased a 240 gallon cube (4*4*2) great dimensions for me, i have almost always managed to keep a cube, now its huge. i got it home yesterday and immediately started trying to bring it back to life, it has alot of scratches, not bad more like scrapes. but i plan to rid of them, or as many as i can, i began to remove the old aquarium background that was on the back pane, woo man, it was tough. i just finished removing it this afternoon. then i got to poloshing and trying to remove some scratches. it went well. but not exactly there yet, im gonna need some pro help here! ill purchase a new kit see if i can get it done, it did bring some life to the tank though. its now sort of shiny the only hard part to clean up is i guess where the sand was, it aged the acrylic? tough to replenish. anyway, next step aside from getting back to tip top shape, is to drill new holes on the bottom pane, and plug some from the back pane for the close loop. then build the stand, i hope it to be furniture grade stuff. and canopy of course. welll let me show you guys some pictures :) let me know what you think.
THESE ARE SOME PICS FROM THE DAY I GO TTHE TANK HOME.

oh and gilbert that tank is legit. thats a pretty big jump, but if it keeps yo uin a tank for more than 6 months, then its all good. and you can definitely see an improvement in the tank. i got this link of a guy who polished his acrylic overflow and it shows how he did it. guess you can take a look. as mama said, he had to do some sanding but the end result was great.

Thanks prof, I got home from work today, headed to walmart for a polisher' and some sand paper and immediately began to sand down my tank, unfortunately, I forgot I didn't have one of them round sanders, so I had to do it all by hand! Ugh! Geeze, and in the garage, no AC! It was hot in there. I took some progress pics, I almost finished the front pane, well I did, but I can still some some strokes on the inside. So I think I will go over it again, next time ill flip the tank, cause working on it while it was upside down was tough stuff! I still have a lot of scratches to go. Ill post some pics real soon. Time to go to bed!

I'm not sure if I'm helping you or giving you a curse, but... You could try flame polishing it. I used to do this in a machine shop on some acrylic parts I machined.
Once you have the deep scratches out, give it a good once over with fine paper. Then get a propane torch and hit an obscure area briefly and see what happens, like on the bottom. Be careful. If you pause too long, it will make small bubbles. THESE CANNOT BE REMOVED. You need to practice a little.
Do not heat up the entire thickness of the tank. You are only trying to quickly heat the surface. The wall of the tank should never get hot. It should be cool to the touch right away. Plastic can be tempered and annealed and stuff. Don't change it's micro structure.
Use a blue flame. I've seen black residue get trapped into the surface with incomplete combustion (yellow flame).
Practice on the bottom or on another piece of acrylic. You will have trouble on inside corners. You might have to do those by hand.
Just be careful, and don't flame me if you ruin your tank. Practice first. It could save you some time.

I have heard of doing it that way, just not sure if I can do it. I don't want a tank with black spots. Ha thanks for the info though, I might suck it up and give it a go
prof
Tue, 30th Jun 2009, 08:31 AM
It is looking great. Polishing just takes time and a real fine grit and more time.
Don't try flame polishing on the main pane. Flame polishing works well on the edges but not on a main pane and it takes a good clean flame and lots of practice to flame polish. Search YouTube for flame polishing for some good how to videos.

Thanks prof. This is starting to get annoying. Ha but its getting better! Just have to figure out how to take the glue they used for trim off...
prof
Thu, 2nd Jul 2009, 08:17 AM
I believe it is hot glue. Try a heat gun and see if that will loosen it up. Just don't overheat the plexi.

by the way, the tank does not sit flush with the stand yet, due to the addition of the paneling not being there yet.

Not sure on the overflow, it is internal, but not a full overflow box. Like a calflo, but internal. The lighting will be 1200 watts of mh, and maybe some actinic supp, by t5 or vho. Not sure yet. I have decided not to go with the close loop, maybe. Just because I find it easier to stick a couple of MP40's in the tank instead, and save some electricity... Ha

I did all the closed loop plumbing today, got the Hammerhead hooked up, and the 8way, it was not easy, but I got it done, filled it up half way, let it all run for a few hours. It looks good. Had one small leak, drained it, hopefully fixed it. Will fill it back up tomorrow. Also will be taking it back down tomorrow afternoon, and will be taking it back to the person who is removing the scratches, as we did not begin, we ran out of supplies.

Stand looks great! :D
I wouldn't even have all the tools to do that... in the future, I want a custom tank... calls for a custom stand so hopefully I can find a good price.
I can't wait to see the next steps!
Looks really good!

HERE IT IS! FINALLY IN THE HOUSE! I WILL BEGIN TO PLUMB IT UP TOMORROW! STILL HAVE TO FINISH THE SUMP, BUT ALL OF THAT COMES FASTER THEN WHAT IT TOOK ME TO GET THE TANK AND STAND READY TO BE IN THE HOUSE. SHOULD BE RUNNING BY NEXT WEEK. IGNNORE THE BAD PICS, AND LEFT OVER GLUE ON TANK... I THNK I WILL ADD A CHROME OUTER BRACE TO COVER THE GLUE, SINCE I WONT BE USING A CANOPY ANYMORE.

LOL But of course! I think when I upgrade, I'll do T5's as well.
I feel like I'd have to figure out a way to keep the water from boiling up.
Looks great!!

Not a problem blindside.
I actually have a T5 on my 70 gallon freshwater (Fluval osaka kit).
It made my plants grow like crazy!!
I was actually going to try a T5 when I upgraded.
Although, it's weird, I don't know too much about watts, spectrum or any other stuff regarding lights. lol I just try and buy a "good" one according to what others recommend.

That's a lot of T5 bulbs for one tank, but T5s are awesome. I'd recommend overdriving them with IceCap 660s for a 24" tank. I've been running 6 T5s on IC 660s on my 90 gal (~24" tall) and I've had great growth and color on SPS as well as shrooms, palys and zoas.

Giant, i chose to go with a closed loop set up, in order to get a closed loop set up you must have at least 2 holes ( realistically you would need more for many returns) one to feed a good size external pump, and the other/s to feed all the returns. i am using a hammerhead external pump, which is pushing close to 6000GPH, i was going to use a Oceans Motions 4 way, but i decided i wanted flow to go around the whole tank. so i went the Oceans Motions 8 way, this way it eliminates powerheads and or waveboxes inside the aquarium. although we have many pumps in the market that are pushing a great amount of flow now, some argue that closed loop systems are not that beneficial. but i chose the closed loop method.

Yes, exactly. Except you have to use your live rock to kind of hide all of the pvc coming out from the tank, but hopefully it will be worth it in the end. I'm sure it will. I'm also sure working around the pvc won't be a problem
