View Full Version : MRSBB 215G Tank Build

BIGBIRD123
Wed, 10th Jun 2009, 11:28 PM
Well we got lucky and picked-up a nice set-up. It was a 215g with stand and sump. Well, when the owner opened up the crate, the euro-bracing on the back of the tank was broken. The tank was shipped in from Guam. Joe made us a sweet deal and we decided we could fix it. Here is the original picture of the tank.

Here are some repairs of the bracing.

So... What's it gonna be?

I think you should CONSIDER stocking it from the BB Port A trip. That would be kind of neat - a Texas tropical tank.

Sorry Bill, not going to happen... I don't have any major plans on what is going inside as of yet. My focus as of now, is once the Euro-bracing is repaired, I plan to paint the back glass of the tank black. Since the overflow is clear, I also plan to cover it with black acrylic. The sand I chose will look salt-n-pepperish, 240lbs. Luckily we have had rock curing for a while.
Current Livestock, a Yellow tang (Thanks JG), (I had actually thought about getting a school of Yellow Tangs, contrasting with the black), a pair of Naked Clowns, a school of Bangaii Cardinals, a Mystery Wrasse, a Coris Wrasse, and a clean up crew.
My 54g Corner is filled with Zoanthids, a beautiful Flame anemone, and various LPS, so my focus for now is to utilize the 210g as a grow-out tank. (No SPS for me!) I am sure it will take time and a lot of patience.
To be continued.......

MRSBIGBIRD123
Sat, 13th Jun 2009, 08:29 PM
Thanks Cecil, we are taking our time, in setting the tank up, and utilizing as much equipment as we currently own.
For Flow, 2 Tunze Streams 6100 w/Multi Controller, a Mag24 Return Pump with Dual Returns. We have a 75g sump/fuge, Red Sea triple-pass skimmer. The lighting will be Dual 175w and 250w MH with T5 actinic supplimentation. It will have lots of fan circulation in the canopy and fuge area to hopefully eliminate the need for a chiller.
We are still working on finalizing the equipment and lighting schemes. For now, this is what we have chosen.

I just put up a dual 250 MH retro in an odyssey housing from Doug ( dconyers ) thanks for he hook up Doug, then stopped by AD and Jason hooked me up with a 250W ballast its looking good now. Pics L8R didn't check to see if he had any(sand). Thanks again for the props..
I couldn't have done it without your generosity on the price of the tank. so thank you and Steve.

Yes, the black sand adds a nice contrast for the corals though you miss out on the reflective properties that the white sand has. Clone's tank first motivated me to use the black sand.

LOL! A bench with a seat that lifts up works nicely. I put a couple of fans inside mine in the event that I leave frags in there for pickups:wink_smile:

Or I float them in the pond and leave a net near by...that one works good too.

Thanks Mizeny, we are in the process of making LOTS OF WATER for Steve's tank, and my own. Steve is going to complete a water change, and that water will be used in my tank as well as new water we are making. Again LOTS OF WATER!

My plan for this weekend to play with the rock, work on some aquascaping, before it goes into the tank. I will update with pics of how/what the rock will hopefully look like.

cool lets see the pic. Hey i forgot to tell you the overflow slits are a little to skinny, they should be a little wider, I just thought of it but after a while the build up with algae and make the water level rise alot which drops the water level in the sump, but if you keep it clean its no problem. if i set it up again i was going to make them wider, little less maintenance.

Well sometimes you have to rework the placement of things...its hard to get it exactly the way you want it the first time. I believe the middle rockwork wont be a problem once it starts changing colors and eventually "purpling."

Christopher,
The rocks are soft limestone, basically the same as pulverized limestone that is the rage for substrate. The are really just for cover but work great for placing zoas. Mike Delgado in Salado, has them all across the back of his tank with no issues.

Did you use a tile saw to cut the rock?

Any concerns with leaching?

I like how the overflow was covered. I think it would be awesome to see it covered in zoanthids, as a previous poster mentioned.

Christopher, that was my plan to begin with, I did this also covered the two sides of the walls with the same rock on my corner tank. Some zoas grow slower than others, but oh well. My tank is planned to be zoa dominant with other LPS. My "Zoa Nation" will be up and running soon.

Well, here is a FTS, Left side and Right side. It is still a little cloudy but I like it...pardon the power head cord, we are still working on it. Also, I think I will put a cover over the overflow to cut down on the glare.

Thanks Mercedes, it was good to see ya'll again, Everything has acclimated well, and they all eat like pigs......lol.
Got the Canopy painted today, and Steve changed out the lights with the T5s he had used on the 280g. Now the colors of corals/fish are more distinct.

Few comments/questions...

I noticed you have a Vortech and a couple of Koralias(?).

Are you finding it necessary to supplement water flow even though you have the Vortech? or
Are the Koralias be moved out eventually leaving only the Vortech?

I was always under the impression that with a Vortech, you don't need any additional power heads.

You stated that you are now running T5s.

Could you give us some details of your T5 setup?
Quantity?
Bulbs?
Order?

Your tank is looking nice! When do we get diatom pics, lol. :innocent2:

Christopher

Tell Steve to keep his hands out/off of YOUR tank!

The Vortech was only temporary, if you look at the last FTS, you'll see it has been removed.

We are going to remove the Tunze streams tonight, with a multi-controller from Steve's 280g, and those will replace the Koralias.

Quantity? 8
Bulbs? Giessmann
Order? Not sure of order, but I know there is 2 blues/ 2true actinics/ 2 pinks and not sure of the other 2.

I have been currently going through the diatom bloom on the rock for the past week, orange is not a "favored" color in this household, so we will be happy once it leaves.....

Christopher

Tell Steve to keep his hands out/off of YOUR tank!
I have become more engaged with this tank, than my previous 110g. I still am relying on Steve for a lot of the grunt work, but I am learning/observing more, and trying to take on most of the load myself. Believe me, there is not a sane person, who would want me to wire a canopy.......:hypnotyized:

You and me both........I added several corals and fish over the weekend that Richard graciously offered me. (Thank you so much) I still need to fine tweak coral placement, and plan to allow everything to grow.
I love to sit and watch the fish and how the interact together.

Cheri...

I noticed your emoticon(sp?) next to the comment about the Vortech. Do you plan on getting one in the future? I am assuming that the Vortech I saw was Steve's.

Glad to see that if nothing else, you're replacing the Koralia with Tunze.

I like my Koralia for the price, but I feel they took up too much space once in the tank. I look forward to getting my Vortech.
