I am setting up a new tank (125 gallons) and have a question. My family is going to Destin, Florida in about 5 weeks and the sand there is fine like sugar and snow white. The water is crystal clear. I was thinking of bringing a couple of large ice chests and going out about waste deep and filling both with sand to bring home for my new tank.
Any ideas about how smart, or safe this is? Will it spoil on a 13 hour drive back? Am I better using standard aquarium 'live sand'?

The sand in Denton is like much of floridas sand, is nearly entirely pulverized quartz crystal.

Is that good, or bad?

Aquarium live sand is a waste of money. "I" would not do this. A lot of work for a non aragonite sand that must be quarantined.

i agree with ping as well there can also be plenty of unseen polutants that you won't know about as well. most "live sand" if collected by companies is collect from off shore to reduce those possiblities just my .02 i am using caibsea agronite it also comes in different grain sizes as well and works great.
